Design of the Odol bottles in the early years and 2010

In 1892, the Dresden entrepreneur Karl August Lingner brought the mouthwash Odol onto the market, a product that for the first time combined the cosmetic with the medicinal effect by adding an antiseptic by adding essential oils . Richard Seifert was the inventor of the mouthwash . On March 5, 1895, the Odol brand was registered in the German trademark register as “tooth and mouth cleaning agent”. By the late 1930s, Odol was manufactured in more than twenty countries. The first ODOL bottles with their distinctive design were the millions in the glass factory in westerzgebirgischen Carlsfeld produced. Exhibits of these bottles are today in the Ore Mountains Glassworks Museum in Neuhausen / Erzgeb. to see.

With advertising expenses that were unusually high for the time, the company was able to win over renowned artists for their advertising, including the German Art Nouveau painter Franz von Stuck and the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini , who dedicated an "Odol ode" to the mouthwash L'ode all 'Odol .

In 1945 the Dresden Lingner works were completely destroyed. In 1949 a Düsseldorf company secured the sole trademark rights, but a mouthwash was also produced in the GDR under the name Odol , which was also traditionally traded in small bottles with a right-angled neck. In 1957, however, this merged with the Leowerke in the VEB Elbe-Chemie . In the 1970s and 1980s, Odol was manufactured by Lingner & Fischer , which was incorporated into the SmithKline Beecham group in 1989 and has been part of GlaxoSmithKline since 2000 . Until the factory was sold, Odol mouthwash was produced exclusively in Herrenberg .

Under the umbrella of GlaxoSmithKline , Odol has developed into the largest oral hygiene brand in Germany. Today Odol has a share of around 70 percent in the mouthwash market and has therefore embarked on the path to becoming an umbrella brand . For example, various toothpastes (since 1989) and dental care chewing gum are offered under the name Odol-med3 . There are also lozenges, mouth sprays and various mouthwashes under the brand name Odol.
