Peppermint oil is in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries important essential oil . It is obtained by steam distillation of peppermint ( Mentha piperita , Lamiaceae ). Countries of origin are the USA ( Mitcham and peppermint oil America Kennewick ) as well as Bulgaria and Italy . In 2001, Germany imported 119 tons from the US.

The main ingredients are menthol (35–45%) and menthone (15–20%); in addition, menthyl acetate (3–5%), neomenthol (2.5–3.5%), isomenthol (3%). For medical applications, it must be ensured that the menthofuran has been separated off by distillation.

Peppermint oil is a colorless to slightly yellowish liquid with a density of 0.900–0.916 g / ml .

Peppermint oil has a weak antibacterial and antifungal effect . It promotes the secretion of gastric juices and bile . In human pharmacological studies, a motility-inhibiting effect on the duodenum could be shown after ingestion in the form of gastric juice-resistant capsules . When applied to the skin, there is a long feeling of cold. In clinical studies, when applied externally (as a 10 percent solution), the effectiveness of peppermint oil for tension headaches compared to a placebo was established. Peppermint oil also proved to be on par with other analgesics in this regard .
application areas
Medical
Peppermint oil is used internally for complaints of the gallbladder and the gastrointestinal tract (digestive system). In irritable bowel syndrome , peppermint oil is given in gastric juice-resistant capsules to calm the muscles of the large intestine. If there is inflammation of the oral mucosa and the upper respiratory tract, peppermint oil is inhaled in hot water.
Applied externally, peppermint oil relieves symptoms of rheumatism , insect bites and burns as a 10 percent ointment or in the spa .
Cosmetically
The main area of application for peppermint oil in cosmetic products is oral care products (over 50%); it is also used as a flavoring in the food industry and in aromatherapy .
