Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound which, due to its antiseptic effect, is used as a medicinal substance in lozenges and mouthwash solutions and sprays to treat infections and inflammation of the oral cavity and the pharynx and to relieve sore throats and swallowing difficulties . The substance is also used as a preservative to preserve pharmaceuticals and is also contained in toothpaste and liquid dental care products to prevent plaque and gingivitis .

Medicines with cetylpyridinium chloride as an active ingredient do not usually require a prescription and are available in pharmacies as so-called OTC drugs . The therapeutic effectiveness for the treatment of infections in the mouth and throat area has not been proven by meaningful clinical studies and, depending on the form of use, is sometimes controversial, as the substance is quickly washed out of the oral cavity by the saliva . For this reason, it is used in combination with other active ingredients in some medicines.
