Otto Bernert

Fritz Otto Bernert (born March 6, 1893 in Ratibor ; † October 18, 1918 there ) was a German officer , most recently in the air force , who scored 27 confirmed kills in the First World War .

Life

Otto Bernert was born as the son of Mayor August Bernert in Ratibor in Upper Silesia . After graduating from high school, Bernert embarked on an officer career. Appointed lieutenant on August 1, 1912 with the 9th Lorraine Infantry Regiment No. 173 .

When the war broke out he was platoon and company commander on the western front . After several injuries, he was unable to work for the infantry, whereupon he reported for training as a flight observer. In January 1916 training as a pilot in the flight schools in Halberstadt and Hanover . In a single-seater plane, he first undertook reconnaissance and reconnaissance flights. From June 9 to August 18, 1917, he led Jagdstaffel 2 , then until April 1917, Jagdstaffel 6, and during this time he had 19 kills. The Pour le Mérite was awarded to him on April 23, 1917. In mid-1917 he achieved his 27th kill and was promoted to first lieutenant .

Seriously injured by an emergency landing, he came to Germany to recover. On October 18, 1918, he died of pneumonia in the Ratibor hospital. Bernert was buried in his hometown.
