Albert Vater (born March 17, 1859 in Soldin / Neumark; † February 7, 1923 in Magdeburg ) was a social democratic politician and co-founder of the KPD in Magdeburg.

Life

The trained nail smith father moved to Magdeburg in 1885 and worked as a blacksmith in the Otto Gruson company . He was a member of the German Metal Workers Association and was involved in the social democratic movement, where he was to be counted to the left wing. In 1898 he organized a forbidden May Day celebration . In 1900 he was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Association in Magdeburg. From 1904 to 1906 he was chairman. He was one of the founders of the district association. In order to undermine the boycott of most of the pub owners against social democratic assemblies, he took over his own restaurant. From 1908 to 1910 he sat for the SPD in the Magdeburg city council. In April 1917, he was one of the opponents of the war loan approval , he was a co-founder of the USPD in Magdeburg and took over the chairmanship. In 1918, Magdeburg's Workers 'and Soldiers' Council appointed him an alderman for the Police President. In February 1919 the local group of the KPD was founded in Magdeburg. Here, too, father was one of the founding members and was first secretary of the local group, later district manager. In 1921, Father was charged with high treason in April 1919 for taking hostage of Reich Justice Minister Otto Landsberg . He killed himself in custody.

In a slightly different version of Albert Vater's biography it is claimed that he was the police chief of Magdeburg until April 1919. Arrested in 1921, he was acquitted in a trial for forming armed gangs. Due to health and economic problems, he shot himself on the night of February 7th to 8th, 1923 in the train station in Halle.

His daughter Clara Vater was the partner of the German communist politician August Creutzburg .

On a poster of the DNVP from 1924 father is quoted as evidence for the correctness of the stab in the back legend :

“We caused our people who went to the front to desert. We organized the deserters, provided them with false papers, provided them with money and leaflets without signature. We sent these people back to the front in all directions, mainly so that they could work on the soldiers and wear the front down. The soldiers decided to defeat them, and so the decline took place gradually but surely. "

The provenance and authenticity of this quote are unclear. Regardless of this, it is largely common sense in historical science that the stab in the back legend does not correspond to historical facts. Ultimately, the decisive factor in the war was the military and economic superiority of the Allies, especially the USA.

Honor

In Magdeburg a street ( Albert-Vater-Straße ) is named after him.
