Langenweddingen is a district of the Sülzetal community in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

It was first mentioned on July 29, 946 as Westerwattinge (Westerwatinge) in a gift from Otto I to the Mauritius monastery in Magdeburg . The name "Langenweddingen" has only been known since the 15th century and is probably due to the elongated, long shape of the Bördedorf . The name Weddingen probably comes from the Germanic language and means something like "speak court". Judgment was made among the Germanic tribes at the places where the thing was held - an old Germanic gathering of responsible tribesmen. The street name "Above the Dingelstelle" still reminds us of this today.

In 1809 the freedom fighter Ferdinand von Schill watered his horses on the village green after his battle near Dodendorf .

On July 6, 1967, a serious train accident occurred in the Langenweddingen area on the Magdeburg – Thale railway line when a passenger train collided with a Minol tank truck loaded with 15,000 liters of light petrol , which immediately exploded. According to official information, 94 people died in the Deutsche Reichsbahn double-decker train , mostly schoolchildren who were on their first day of vacation on their way to a vacation camp. The number of victims was particularly questioned by the rescue workers. They suspected about 140 dead. This train accident is considered to be the worst in the history of the GDR and one of the worst in the history of the German railways .

Coat of arms of Langenweddingen

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded on July 29, 1938 by the President of the Province of Saxony.

Blazon : "In red under two silver six-pointed stars a silver crenellated wall, on the gate with a red six-pointed star."

Weddingen (red star) swallows up the towns: Schlenningen and Missingsdorf (silver stars) and becomes Groß-Weddingen in the 12th century, which has reached "urban dimensions" and is enclosed by a wall with five gates. The colors red and silver are those of the "Magdeburgisch Land".

The coat of arms was designed by the graphic artist Willy Kluge , who lives in Osterweddingen .

The Protestant St. George's Church, a hall church , was built in 1703 by Heinrich Schmutz , the Romanesque church tower of the previous church was preserved. The church has a very rich baroque interior , including: a carved altar from 1713, a pulpit and richly carved galleries with an organ prospect . The font is Gothic . The church was supported (2005/06) by donations from the German Foundation for Monument Protection because it had become very dilapidated.

The local outdoor pool was built in 1928.
