Hans Reckleben (born January 6, 1864 in Langenweddingen , † March 9, 1920 in Leipzig ) was a German chemist .

Life

Born as the son of a landowner, Hans Reckleben attended the Domgymnasium Magdeburg , which he left in 1884 when he graduated from high school, initially to study chemistry for several semesters in Strasbourg and Hanover . In 1886 he became a member of the Corps Slesvico-Holsatia in Hanover . He then worked for various sugar factories, but then continued his chemistry studies in Berlin and Erlangen from 1890 onwards. In 1893 he was at the University of Erlangen for Dr. phil. PhD.

In January 1895 he became assistant to Ernst Otto Beckmann in Erlangen and followed him to Leipzig in 1897, when he accepted a position at the newly established laboratory for applied chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Leipzig . In 1904 he was appointed senior assistant at the institute, which was significantly enlarged in 1902 and 1903. When Beckmann was appointed first director at the newly founded Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin-Dahlem in 1912 , he also retained the position of senior assistant under Carl Paal , who was Beckmann's successor at the Leipzig chair. On March 9, 1920, he died in his study during the March riots in Leipzig, hit by a bullet.

In addition to his teaching activities, Reckleben rendered special services to the internal development and administration of the institute. Although he did not work as a lecturer, he nonetheless continued to work scientifically, which is proven by his numerous publications. He had a pronounced experimental skill and constantly improved his experimental apparatus. This is evidenced by the fact that in the last 15 years of his scientific work he worked with extremely toxic gases, but never had an accident. His work on arsenic, antimony and hydrogen phosphide were of particular importance. But his analytical work was also characterized by a high level of experimental art and precise and detailed observation.

Awards

In recognition of his professional services, Hans Reckleben was appointed royal Saxon court counselor in 1915 .
