Fresenius' journal for analytical chemistry was the oldest journal for analytical chemistry .
It was founded in Wiesbaden in 1861 under the name Zeitschrift für Analytische Chemie by Carl Remigius Fresenius , this name existed up to volume 127 in 1944. Between 1944 and 1947 the journal did not appear due to the Second World War . Between 1947 and 1989 the journal was called "Fresenius' Zeitschrift für Analytische Chemie". In 1990, English was introduced as the journal's sole language and the journal was renamed the Fresenius Journal of Analytical Chemistry . The first articles in English appeared in the magazine in the 1950s, and between 1960 and 1990 both English and German articles were printed.
In March 2001, Springer-Verlag took over all shares in the journal with retroactive effect from January 1, 2001, in which it had previously held 50 percent. The journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry has been published since January 2002 , the new journal was created from a merger of "Fresenius Journal", "Analusis - A European Journal of Analytical Chemistry" and "Quimica Analitica" (Barcelona, Spain)
The impact factor for 2017 was 3.307. In the statistics of the Science Citation Index , the journal with this impact factor ranks 13th out of 74 journals in the "Analytical Chemistry" category. In the field of “Biochemical Research Methods” it ranks 21st out of 79 journals.
history
It was founded one year after the Karlsruhe Congress , the first international congress for chemistry, at which, however, it became clear how different the views of chemists on fundamental concepts were. The first issue of the magazine was dispatched on December 15, 1861; it was published by CW Kreidel.
In June, Carl Remigius Fresenius had sent an announcement from the magazine, a "Prospectus" in which he wrote, among other things:
“It can be easily demonstrated that all the great advances in chemistry are more or less directly related to new or improved analytical methods. ... The analytical methods are a great achievement, an important scientific treasure. However, they are only fully available if they are easily manageable and accessible. (...) This task can only be fulfilled by a periodical writing, but with the large extent of the material only one which is exclusively and completely dedicated to it. "
The association of the journal with a laboratory turned out to be a great advantage, since the methods of the submitted work were often checked in the laboratory of Fresenius; this diligence "soon gave the journal a high reputation among scientists and practitioners".
In 1867 the magazine had a circulation of 1,250 copies. After the magazine was initially published four times a year, due to the increasing number of articles from 1887 (Vol. 26), six issues had to be published annually. The magazine has been published monthly since 1897. In that year Heinrich Fresenius took over the magazine after the death of his father.
The first publisher, CW Kreidel, died in 1890, after which Joseph Friedrich Bergmann took over his publishing house and with it the magazine. In 1914 Bergmann had taken on the publisher Julius Springer as a partner. Bergmann died in 1917, so that the magazine was transferred to Springer-Verlag.

- Albin Kurtenacker from 1947 (Volume 128)
- Wilhelm Nils Fresenius and Albin Kurtenacker 1949 to 1962 (Volume 129 to 187)
- Wilhelm Fresenius 1962 to 1982 (Volume 188 to 310)
- Wilhelm Fresenius and Ingo Lüderwald 1982 to 2001 (Volume 311 etc.)
