The houses, like the houses on Werftstrasse, were referred to as Hinter dem Kaution . Later, in the 18th century, the name Schiffersteg , then Schifferstraße , became common. In 1887 the street was renamed to avoid confusion with the existing Schifferstraße in the incorporated Neustadt . Until 1631 the city wall ran through the street, which was closed by a gate at night. The gate was last mentioned in 1731 as the Elbe Gate . The name of the street goes back to the old Packhof , a large baroque building, which was located near the eastern end of the street.

The first training facility of the club, which was then particularly successful in the youth sector, was the pioneering bathing establishment near the Königsbrücke in the Stromelbe . Around 1923 the association took over the Schanzenteich located on the northern part of the Rotehorninsel of the no longer used Fort IX of the Magdeburg fortress . The facility was converted for club purposes. The moat that previously surrounded the fort was filled with water and drained. A club house with a domed building was created. The ramparts were made accessible with stairs. After the end of the Second World War, the facility fell into disrepair and was still used by the Magdeburgers as an unofficial bathing area. In the early 1950s, the bathing area was filled in. Today the street and housing estate Großer Werder is located in this area .
In the course of the creation of the new Schöppensteg building area , three access roads had to be named. The name Poststrasse goes back to the office building of the Brandenburg Post , which has been in Kreuzgangstrasse 6 (corner of Poststrasse) since 1668 . The east-west connection was originally called Bläßstrasse and was then named Poststrasse. The north-south part was a square until 1699. Presumably it was already used as a place for the autumn fair in the Middle Ages . The money changers are also likely to have been located here. From 1699 the square was then built on, as it is called, by little people . The area was considered a whore corner and may have served prostitution . Since houses no. 7 to 9 of the Domplatz were only built around 1720, there was a direct, wide connection to the Domplatz. In 1731 the square was repaired and the street laid out. The old name Paradeplatz lasted until 1807, but from 1743 the name Neue Poststraße prevailed. Neue was used to distinguish it from the previous neighboring Poststrasse. The "union" of both streets under the common name Poststrasse took place in 1808.
After the destruction in the Second World War, the city was rebuilt, which did not adhere to the historically grown urban structure. The remaining part of the street (between today's state parliament and Hundertwasserhaus) was added to the cloister street , which originally ran along today's Arthur-Ruppin-Straße . The part running in the east-west direction was partially built over. In part, a footpath leading to the monastery of Our Dear Women, unnamed for several decades, ran roughly in the area of this part of the former Poststrasse. On November 9, 2006, the city council decided in connection with the naming of Erhard-Hübener-Platz to assign this footpath to Kreuzgangstrasse.
