Kannenstieg is a district in the north of the city of Magdeburg .

Location and population

6333 inhabitants live in an area of 1.1424 km² (as of December 31, 2016). In the south, Kannenstieg borders on the Neustädter Feld , in the west and north on the Sülzegrund and in the east on the Neustädter See district . The eastern border is formed by the Magdeburger Ring city motorway , with the city motorway itself still belonging to the Kannenstieg.

The area of the district is divided into four districts statistical Danziger village , business park New Sülzeweg , Hanns Eisler-Platz / Kannenstieg and brawn Anger divided. The western part with the Gdańsk village is characterized by row houses, in the eastern part there is a residential area with multi-storey prefabricated houses that was built during the GDR .

The proportion of people living on social benefits in the new development area is significantly higher than the average in Magdeburg. The proportion of foreigners is below average at 2.1% (as of 2001).

The river Große Sülze flows to the west and at the same time forms the border to the Sülzegrund district.

history

The Danziger Dorf settlement in 1936

Until 1936 the area was used purely for agriculture and was uninhabited. On July 20, 1936, the foundation stone for the Danzig village was laid. This is one of five settlements that were created in the north of Magdeburg between 1935 and 1939. 35 housing estates and terraced houses with 188 people's apartments were built here , in which families from Gdansk moved in. Because of the high unemployment in the Free State , their suppliers were already working in Magdeburg. The Gdańsk coat of arms can still be found on the former community house of the settlement. This house, with a restaurant, shop and two other apartments, was built in 1938 in the style of a porch house. The settlement consisted of three streets: Danziger Dorf , Danziger Straße and Langfuhrer Straße (a district of Gdansk). 200 m² of garden land belonged to each apartment. The topping-out ceremony for the first houses was celebrated on November 5, 1936 . In an air raid in World War II , 38 people died in the air raid shelter of the community center.

After the end of the war, displaced persons from Danzig moved to live with their relatives in the settlement. In 1951 the streets were renamed, and the settlement could no longer be officially referred to as Danzig Village . In the 1950s and 1960s, the settlement was connected to the municipal drinking water and sewage network by the residents themselves .

The current street names are: Wenddorfer Weg , Bertinger Weg and Loitscher Weg (see Magdeburger Strasse ). After the fall of the Wall , the tram stop was named Danziger Dorf .

Prefabricated housing estate from the 1970s

In the 1970s, a new building area made up of multi-storey houses in GDR panel construction was built east of the Gdansk village. The new building project, initially referred to as Magdeburg-Nord , included not only today's Kannenstieg, but also the Neustädter See district to the east. The organizational separation into two parts of the city only took place later along the Magdeburger Ring motorway, which was also built in the 1970s. The construction work on the residential quarters lasted from 1973 to 1981. The reason for the choice of the building site was the district heating offer of the Rothensee thermal power station, as well as the local recreational opportunities offered by the Neustädter See and the Magdeburg Zoo . In 1977 the architects, engineers and town planners involved in the project received the GDR National Prize .

After the political change in the GDR , the housing demands of the population changed significantly from 1989 onwards. Prefabricated housing estates like the Kannenstieg suffered significant population losses. The district lost almost a third of the resident population within 10 years. In the course of the Urban Redevelopment East program , a large number of apartments were demolished or dismantled. Many of the originally six-storey prefabricated buildings were reduced to four storeys and renovated.

economy

In accordance with its character as a residential area, residential use dominates. In the northeastern area near the Magdeburger Ring, however, there is the Neuer Sülzeweg industrial park . In total there are 154 member companies of the IHK and 16 of the Chamber of Crafts in the district (as of 2003).
