The Magdeburger Ring is a motorway-like , approximately 14 km long expressway in the urban area of Magdeburg . It is developed as an intersection-free highway with two lanes in each direction of travel and no hard shoulder. Popularly it is also known as the Tangente or West Tangent , as it runs past the city center to the west. A speed limit of 80 km / h applies throughout the city. Around 70,000 vehicles pass through Magdeburger Ring every day.

history

The name "ring" is of historical origin. A ring road already existed in the 19th century , which, as a kind of early bypass, led west of the fortifications in a semicircle around the city. Parts of this old street layout are still there. The names of these streets, which are partially intersected by the Magdeburger Ring and railway lines, are called ... ring . So the Sachsenring , Adelheidring , Editharing , Kaiser-Otto-Ring and Hohenstaufenring .

During the GDR era , a traffic concept was developed that should guide through traffic around the city center. Other large cities of this size often use the classic traffic concept with inner and outer city rings to divert traffic. The narrow location of the city center between the Elbe and the railway lines running between north and south and the narrow but over 2 km long area required the diversion of traffic with the help of four tangents. Despite its square shape, this major project was called the "City-Ring" and is considered the most important element of the inner-city infrastructure, consisting of City-Ring North ( Walther-Rathenau-Straße B 1 ), City-Ring East ( Schleinufer , Steubenallee ), City-Ring Süd ( Am Fuchsberg ) and City-Ring West (Magdeburger Ring B 71 ). Due to the shape, the corner nodes played a special role and required efficient implementation. However, these nodes are also considered to be the focus of accidents. The Askanische Platz, for example, is Magdeburg's most accident-prone place with almost 60 accidents in 2013.

Of the tangents, the construction of the Magdeburger Ring was the only one that was built as an expressway. Construction began in 1970, and the first section from the north of the city to Halberstädter Strasse was approved in 1974. It was completely completed, including the motorway connection, in 1975 as part of a five-year plan . At that time the road was not yet completely free of crossings; the corresponding connections and bridge structures were only created in the following years.

The ring was completely illuminated until 2001, but the lighting was switched off due to the high costs and urgent cost-saving measures. Thanks to a balanced budget and a conversion of some areas to light-emitting diodes , it was decided in August 2014 that the ring should be completely illuminated again at night. The lighting was reactivated in November 2014.

course

The Magdeburger Ring begins in the north of Magdeburg directly from the four-lane B 189 coming from Stendal and remains continuously in the city as a north-south tangent and motorway feeder with four lanes. The tangent has been developed without intersections and has 15 entrances and exits as a connection to the inner city traffic, some of which are still being developed. In addition, the ring itself is crossed by a total of twelve bridges, five of which are pedestrian and bicycle bridges.

The northern end marks the federal highway 2 near Barleben with its junction in the form of a trefoil cross . From there, the ring continues partly at ground level through the urban area, but also as an elevated road , for example as an overpass over various roads and railroad tracks.

In the north of the city, at the level of Ebendorfer Chaussee , the B 71 from Haldensleben merges into the city motorway . The Magdeburger Ring is also connected to the four-lane B 1 in the city, which functions as an east-west axis in Magdeburg. Another junction in the city is Damaschkeplatz , over which the Magdeburger Ring runs. You have to pass it if you want to drive directly into the city center from the western parts of the city or from the city motorway. It is also a central hub for public transport, rail and (long-distance) bus traffic. This makes it one of the city's busiest intersections. After crossing the southern urban area, the tangent meets the federal highway 14 , which is again connected with a clover-leaf-shaped junction. Going on, the Magdeburger Ring becomes the B 81 in the direction of Halberstadt .

noise protection

Due to the inner-city location, there are precautions to prevent noise emissions. This includes, for example, the continuous setting of the speed at 80 km / h. A continuous noise protection development was not necessary, as it is only accompanied by greenery in many places and only in some places does the residential development come close to the tangent.

Environmental zone

Since January 1, 2013, an environmental zone has existed in Magdeburg's city center, into which only vehicles with a green sticker are allowed to enter. The Magdeburger Ring, which crosses the environmental zone exactly in the middle from north to south, is exempt from this regulation. The Maybachstraße is excluded from this regulation, as the buses on the Damaschkeplatz nearby bus station hit on this street and then go to the Magdeburg ring.
