Neustädter Feld is a district in the north of the city of Magdeburg .

Area and inhabitants

9,867 people (as of December 31, 2016) live in Neustädter Feld on an area of 2.0287 km². The district is greatly from the time of the GDR created housing estate coined. The proportion of people who are unemployed or living on social benefits is above the urban average. The proportion of foreigners is slightly below average at 2.4% (as of 2002).

location

The Neustädter Feld is subdivided into five statistical districts (Birkenweiler, Kleiner Silberberg, Meseberger Weg / Milchweg, Neustädter Feld Ost and Neustädter Feld West), which, however, are essentially of statistical significance. In the north the districts Sülzegrund and Kannenstieg border , in the east the Neue Neustadt , in the south Magdeburg-northwest and in the west Neu Olvenstedt and Großer Silberberg .

history

The village of Lebersdorf already existed in the area of today's Neustädter Feld in the 10th century, but it became deserted in the Middle Ages . The area was then mainly used for agriculture for centuries. The name Neustädter Feld is derived from its function as a field mark of the eastern town of Neustadt .

1870 for the Fortress Magdeburg the Fort VI built, which is immediately adjacent to the west current Neustadt field, but part of the area NW. Later, the intermediate plant VIa in the northern part of the district was added as a further building of the fortress .

In 1930, the Birkenweiler settlement was built north of the Olvenstedter Graseweg .

In 1977, the construction of the new prefabricated building area Neustädter Feld, planned from 1973, began. 5000 apartments were built here by 1983. The already existing small single-family housing estate In den Meerwellen was enclosed by the new building area. Almost 20,000 people lived in the district. After the political change in 1989 and German reunification , apartments in prefabricated buildings fell sharply in demand. The population nearly halved within a decade. With subsidies, considerable parts of the housing stock were demolished and the remaining apartments were largely renovated. The street names, which were partly strongly determined by the state ideology during the GDR era, have been changed. For the history of the streets see: Magdeburger Strasse .

economy

There is only non-disruptive business in the area. In 2002, 235 member companies of the IHK and 29 companies of the Chamber of Crafts were registered in the district.

Buildings, monuments, green spaces

St. Mechthild Church

The Florapark and the Catholic St. Mechthild Church, built in 1984, belong to Neustädter Feld . The intermediate plant VI a of the Magdeburg Fortress located in the district is entered in the local monument register.
