The Furtlake is a watercourse that is used for drainage in the city of Magdeburg .
The Furtlake is located east of the Elbe , mainly in the Berliner Chaussee district and drains an area of 35.2 km² in the eastern areas of the city. This area is limited to the west by the dykes leading to the Elbe and to the east by the dykes of the Elbeum flood canal . Above the Furtlake the swan ditch and other ditches adjoin. The drainage takes place via a sluice into the Elbe flood canal .
The Furtlake is crossed by Bundesstraße 1 . To the north of the main road, the Furtlake is classified as a first-order body of water.
The artificially created watercourse offers the typical forms of drainage ditches of steep embankment and little vegetation. The speed of flow of the Furtlake is slow. In a few sections, ecologically more valuable reed beds were able to settle. The ecological permeability of the watercourse is impeded by thresholds in the area of the federal road and a railway embankment that also crosses it.
The streets An der Lake and Furtlake-Privatweg , which run parallel to the Furtlake in sections, are named after the watercourse.
