The Fürstenwall is a promenade lined with lime trees in Magdeburg 's old town (Magdeburg) . Located between Magdeburg Cathedral , the monastery of Our Lady and the Elbe , the complex is one of the most historic green spaces in the city.

history

The area of the current facility was originally undeveloped foreland of the Elbe. The course of the Elbe near Magdeburg changed several times over time. In the second half of the 12th century the Elbe shifted to the east, so that a strip of land fell dry below the cathedral rock and ponds and swamps formed. These were then backfilled and used as gardens, e.g. B. the garden of the Möllenvogtei . In the years 1430/31 six towers were built on the banks of the Elbe. From south to north, it was the tower behind the exit of the Möllenvogtei , Kiek in de Köken , Scheiblischer Turm , Schieferurm , Seidenaschenpforte and the tower at the Ratsmühle . In the area there were two older towers, the Tatar tower and the Wipturm . Later the city council had the towers connected with walls. The initially wooden walls were later replaced by solid walls filled with rubble stones.

During the reign of Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau , the Fürstenwall was rededicated. The fortress was turned into a mixture of park, apartments and business operations through earthfills and renovations. In 1877 a war memorial was erected on an artificial hill .

During the Nazi era , the facility was redesigned again. The former Kiek defense tower in de Köken was converted into a hall of honor, the surrounding area into a cemetery of honor.

In the meantime, the Fürstenwall is a popular excursion destination, which is located in the middle of interesting tourist destinations. In addition to Kiek in de Köken, the tower behind the Möllenvogtei exit and the Tatar tower are two other former defense towers on the Fürstenwall. Other defensive towers originally in the area, such as the Wipturm and the Scheiblische Turm, have not been preserved. Since the Fürstenwall rises several meters above the level of the Elbe bank, there is a good view of the river. The sculpture Die Heilige Mechthild von Magdeburg, which belongs to the Magdeburg sculpture park , has been located at the northern end of the Fürstenwall since 2010 . The Editha monument is located in a small park south of the Kiek in de Köken tower . To the north of the Tatar tower is the Fürstenwall 3b monument, used for gastronomy purposes .
