Saint Mechthild of Magdeburg
Plastic with a base

The holy Mechthild of Magdeburg is a sculpture in Magdeburg's old town .

The sculpture is located at the northern end of the Magdeburg Fürstenwall , high above the left bank of the Elbe and belongs to the Magdeburg Sculpture Park .

It was created by the artist Susan Turcot as part of the project DIE ELBE [in] between carried out in 2007 and 2008 at the Kunstmuseum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen . The installation at the current location took place in 2010.

The sculpture made of transparent plastic is a 1.40 meter high female figure representing the mystic Mechthild von Magdeburg . The figure was placed on a tall, narrow steel base. The base and figure have a total height of 3.80 meters, the height being further increased by the elevated position of the Fürstenwall above the Elbe.

The transparent material, which is unusual for an outdoor sculpture, refers to the work of Mechthild of Magdeburg. She had laid down her visions in her seven-volume work The Flowing Light of the Godhead . Mechthild often used the word fleece . Turcot saw it as a metaphor for freedom, for the willingness of the soul to break free from its static form, and for the joy that the soul enjoys from this freedom of movement. The translucency stands for the immaterial and transcendent themes of Mechthild's texts and the desire to free the soul from the body. The flowing closes the gap between the human and the divine. The installation on the Elbe includes the river as a powerful place for remembrance and renewal.
