Hegelstrasse war memorial

The war memorial in Magdeburg was erected in the park on Fürstenwall in 1877 in memory of the fallen soldiers of the German War and the Franco-German War . The design came from Hermann Eggert , the sculptural work was carried out by Emil Hundrieser . The war memorial on Hegelstrasse is now a listed building .

history

The leveling of Bastion Cleve in Magdeburg's city fortifications made it necessary to redesign the square in 1872. In the Fürstenwallpark, which is being created there, an artificial elevation was created for a war memorial to commemorate the fallen from the wars that have just passed. The inauguration of the war memorial took place on September 2, 1877 ( Sedan Day ), the seventh anniversary of the surrender of the French troops and the capture of Napoleon.

The dedication of the monument on gray-polished granite slabs reads: "To the warriors of the Magdeburg district who fell in the fight for Germany's honor and unity". The battles are named on two other panels: “Magdeburg regiments fought near Podol, Münchengrätz, Königgrätz, Pressburg” (German War) and “Beaumont, Sedan, Toul, Strasbourg, Paris, Belfort” (Franco-German War).

The design by Hermann Eggert was originally called "Victoria" and a third plaque was intended to remind of Düppel and the German-Danish War of 1864. However, this was not implemented.

Location and building description

One of the four reliefs: imperial proclamation

The memorial is located in the park on Fürstenwall along Hegelstrasse, on the western bank of the Elbe south of Magdeburg Cathedral.

The body of the monument is formed by a stepped sandstone stele with the imperial crown on top . This tower stands on an octagonal pedestal with a parapet and railing made of cast iron. A flight of stairs runs towards the monument from the east. In addition, paths from north and south lead to the axis of the monument.

The course of the war in 1870/71 is allegorically depicted on four bronze reliefs: first the farewell of a soldier from the family, then the fight, the capture of Napoleon and finally the proclamation of Wilhelm I as emperor. At the corners of the monument are the coat of arms of Magdeburg and the Prussian eagle . Above that between lion sculptures are bronze portrait medallions of Otto von Bismarck , Wilhelm I and Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke .
