The Editha monument is a memorial to Queen Editha in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in Magdeburg's old town on the east side of the Fürstenwall , southwest of the Kiek in de Köken tower .

Design and history

The monument consists of a stone sculpture on a pedestal. The larger-than-life sculpture depicts Editha, who stayed longer in Magdeburg and also died here, sitting with a ball. Editha is shown in a relaxed position, leaning on her right arm. The head is oval and has straight hair placed at the nape of the neck, which is framed by a wreath of curls in the style of antiquity. A thin robe falls over her right shoulder. However, it leaves the upper body and feet uncovered and leads to an emphasis on physicality. Her attentive gaze is directed to the left, where she is holding the ball in her left hand. The ball is considered a metaphor for the globe , but can also serve as celestial sphere , the typical attribute of Urania as a muse of astronomy , to be seen. It is decorated with a three-legged swastika with laterally tapering spikes and is interpreted as a sun symbol and a savior.

The monument was created from shell limestone by the sculptor and painter Johann-Paul Grimm , known as Hans Grimm (1886–1940) . It was probably created in 1937 while Grimm was working on the Eike von Repkow memorial . The work shows a realistic, somewhat monumental -looking representation in the style of decorative symbolism . The sculptural performance of the work is rated as high.

Initially, the sculpture was probably set up on Damaschkeplatz in Magdeburg in the area of the western glass plant. In the period from 1954 to 2002 it was then on the Editharing 40 property of EVM Magdeburg , and from 1990 of EON Avacon AG. After the site was taken over by the Ministry of Finance of the State of Saxony-Anhalt , the sculpture was moved to a park at the EON Avacon AG education center in Krottorf . In March 2011, the Editha memorial was returned to Magdeburg and was erected on November 5, 2011 at its current location.

The monument is considered an important sculptural work from the first half of the 20th century in Magdeburg.

In the local register of monuments , the monument is listed under registration number 107 15032 as an architectural monument .
