The Möllenvogtei garden is a listed garden in Magdeburg 's old town . Located in the immediate vicinity of Magdeburg Cathedral , the complex is "hidden" behind walls.

history

The history of this facility goes back to the time when Magdeburg's old town was built. Since the site was used for the archbishop's tree garden, it has probably only been used as an open space and is therefore probably the oldest open space in the city.

The name Möllenvogtei comes from the middle of the 15th century and refers to a mill located there and the archbishop's bailiff who lived nearby. The Vogteigartens was first mentioned in 1377, when the citizens of Magdeburg had to create a small port behind the Möllenvogtei so that the archbishop had his own port.

In the west of the complex is the only remaining city gate of Magdeburg. It was built in 1493 after a previous building was demolished. The port fell into disrepair in the following time, it is often mentioned in historical sources as a swamp, on Otto von Guericke's city map from 1632 the port is already enclosed by the city wall and no longer has an exit.

After the establishment of the Kingdom of Westphalia , the garden went to the Magdeburg magistrate in 1810 (as part of the monastery freedom).

After renovation work in the last decade, the plant is enjoying steady influx, e.g. B. through open-air theater performances.

Worth seeing

Access to the Möllenvogteigarten from Domplatz takes place at the Möllenvogtei exit , Magdeburg's only preserved city gate. To the east of the garden you can see the choir of the Sankt Gangolfi Chapel . To the south is the house Fürstenwall 3b .
