Scheiblischer tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scheibliche Tower was a defense tower of the medieval city fortifications of Magdeburg's old town .

location

It was located near what is now the northern end of the Fürstenwall , on the Elbe side of the wall, only a little south of the confluence of the Gouvernementsberg on the Schleinufer.

history

It was built in 1430/31 together with five other defensive towers, with which the southeastern part of the city fortifications along the Elbe was expanded. Of these towers, the two southernmost ones, the tower behind the exit of the Möllenvogtei and Kiek in de Köken, are still preserved today. To the north of Kiek in de Köken stood the Scheiblische Tower. To the north followed the slate tower , silk bag gate and the tower at the council mill . In some cases, the naming of Scheiblische Turm and Slate Tower is also given reversed. With the further development of weapon technology, the towers lost their military importance. At the beginning of the 18th century, the city wall, in front of which the Scheiblische Tower stood, was redesigned into the Fürstenwall , an elevated promenade that was also used by civilians. The defense towers were shortened to the height of the wall and the stumps were decorated with pavilions. The Scheiblische Tower was probably completely removed in the 19th century when the road that ran between the old city wall and the Elbe, now the Schleinufer, was built. At the site where the tower was part of the city wall, it is still possible on the side of the Elbe closing the gap by brick in the otherwise from greywacke - rubble made Wall see.
