Carl Friedrich Echtermeier
Carl Friedrich Echtermeier (born October 27, 1845 in Kassel , † July 30, 1910 in Braunschweig ) was a German sculptor and university professor .
Life
The son of a plaster mold maker learned the basics of the craft in his father's workshop. He first attended the Kassel Art Academy and continued his education at the Munich Art Academy in 1865/1866 . This was followed by a visit to the Dresden Art Academy from 1867 to 1870 , where the influence of his teacher Ernst Hähnel (1811-1891) was formative. His figure “Dancing Bacchante”, created in 1870, has received several medals. In 1870 Echtermeier married and went on a trip to Italy. In 1871 he founded his own studio in Dresden , where he was on friendly terms with the sculptors Robert Diez and Adolf Breymann . He corresponded with the Berlin sculptor Fritz Schaper .
University professor in Braunschweig
In 1883 Echtermeier succeeded Georg Ferdinand Howaldt as a teacher for modeling and embossing at the Technical University of Braunschweig . His students were, for example, Gottlieb Elster (1867-1917), Hermann Siedentop (1864-1943), Arnold Kramer (1863-1918) and Eugen Kircheisen (1855-1913). The collaboration with the architect Constantin Uhde (hare hunting frieze for Villa Löbbecke 1882 and frieze for Rimpausche Villa 1886 in Braunschweig) ended in a dispute in 1895. Echtermeier was unable to win the competition for a Bismarck monument in Berlin, although his design was carried out in Magdeburg in 1899.
Echtermeier, who had been awarded the title “Privy Councilor”, died in Braunschweig in 1910 and was buried in the St. Pauli Cemetery in Dresden.
