Constantin Uhde , often also Konstantin Uhde , (* March 23, 1836 in Braunschweig ; † May 31, 1905 there ; full name: Constantin Ernst Carl James Uhde ) was a German architect and professor at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig.

Life

The son of the university professor August Uhde visited the Martino-Katharineum in Braunschweig. His mother was Caroline Dorothea Pauline Henriette Macrae of Holmains († December 12, 1880). From 1854 to 1857 he studied construction sciences at the Collegium Carolinum, and then worked in the ducal building management and the ducal railway administration. There he worked as an engineer in the construction of the Holzminden – Kreiensen state railway .

Between 1863 and 1865 Uhde stayed for a longer period of study in France, where he a. a. Heard lectures at Viollet-le-Duc in Paris and worked on restoration projects under Émile Boeswillwald (1815–1896) at Saint-Chapelle and Orleans Cathedral.

From 1865 to 1901 Uhde lectured at the Collegium Carolinum, from 1871 as a professor of ancient architecture. Several study trips took him during this time. a. to the world exhibitions in Paris (1867) and Vienna (1873), to Italy (1869, 1872, 1878, 1883 and 1886), England (1859, 1887), Scotland and Ireland (1890/1891) and to the Iberian Peninsula (1888 / 1889).

In 1877 he was one of the founders of the Braunschweiger Kunstgewerbeverein, as its chairman from 1884 to 1903. In 1881 Uhde was one of the founding members of the Feuchten Brush , a regulars' table that brought artists and art lovers together in Braunschweig.

Uhde traveled to Chicago for the World Exhibition in 1893 on behalf of the German Reich and was appointed Privy Councilor in the same year. In 1898 he was awarded the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of Henry the Lion for his services .

Buildings (selection)

Uhde was strongly influenced by the architect Gottfried Semper . He built almost exclusively in Braunschweig in the Neo-Renaissance style , based on models from the Italian and German Renaissance.
