August Uhde

August Wilhelm Julius Uhde (born April 26, 1807 in Königslutter , † July 25, 1861 in Braunschweig ) was a German astronomer , mathematician and university professor .

Life

The son of the forester Christian Rudolf Elias Uhde (* 1773 - † 1812) and his wife Johanna Elisabeth Friederike Uhde (* 1779), b. Harsleben, grew up in Königslutter and attended grammar school in Helmstedt from 1820 to 1825 . From 1825 he studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Göttingen . In 1825 he became a member of the Corps Brunsviga Göttingen . In April 1829 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a teacher for mathematics and physics at the Lyceum in Aurich . From 1831 to 1835 he taught the same subjects at the grammar school in Oldenburg . In addition, from 1833 he was a teacher of mathematics and physics at the school teachers' seminar there.

Activity in Braunschweig

At the beginning of 1835, Uhde received calls to Hanover and Braunschweig, where he decided against Hanover and on October 8, 1835, was employed as a professor of astronomy and mathematics at the Collegium Carolinum . As early as Easter 1835 he visited Braunschweig to take part in the deliberations on the reorganization of the Collegium Carolinum, which was reorganized into three academic departments in 1835. In November 1835 Uhde became a member of the board of directors of the Carolinum and chairman of the newly founded technical department. In May 1840 he was appointed school councilor and member of the ducal consistory. Since 1848 he also taught physics and meteorology. Uhde was a member of the Braunschweig State Parliament from 1848 until his sudden death in 1861. Uhde last lived on Sandweg (today Magnitorwall) in Braunschweig.

Uhde was since 23 July 1833 with the semi-Scottish Caroline Dorothea Pauline Henriette Macrae of Holmains (* 1813 - † 1880, father Colonel James Macrae of Holmains, also Jacques Edouard Hugo de Macrae de Holmains † 1820 Lemgo, mother Karoline Luise Wilhemine Friederike nee . Warendorff) married. The son Constantin Uhde , born in 1836 , later became known as an architect and university lecturer at the Technical University of Braunschweig.
