Katerbowsche bathing establishment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Katerbowsche Badeanstalt was a river bathing establishment on the Old Elbe , a tributary of the Elbe in Magdeburg .

On the initiative of Magdeburg's Mayor August Wilhelm Francke , a river bathing establishment was built on the Rotehorn Island , north of the Long Bridge , and opened on June 12, 1826. In cooperation with the military under Major General Ernst von Pfuel , one of the first municipal river baths in Germany was opened to the public for 1,484 thalers and 14 silver groschen .

If the pool was originally intended for heavy military use, this purpose took a back seat. The city of Magdeburg subsidized the operation of the pool from city funds. Due to financial difficulties after the opening of a competing pool in 1845 and due to unfavorable summers, plans were made to relocate the pool, also with the moral argument of better privacy protection for bathers. However, the installation was not carried out and the city decided to lease or sell the bath instead.

In 1852 the brothers Karl Katerbow and Gustav Adolf Katerbow , who worked as pool attendants, bought the bathing establishment for 1,000 thalers, renamed it Katerbowsche Badeanstalt and modernized it. From 1871 Gustav Adolf Katerbow led the company alone. The bathroom grew in popularity. In 1917, the bathing establishment had meanwhile passed to Otto Katerbow and after his death to his daughter, the bath was destroyed in a flood . However, it was rebuilt and modernized at the same time. In addition to a 50-meter pool and a separate women's pool, the bathing establishment had its own restaurant and mirror in the basement.

During the Second World War , the facility was destroyed in an air raid on the neighboring Lange Brücke (today's Anna-Ebert-Brücke ). In the remnants of the facility, makeshift operations continued even after the Second World War. In the 1950s, however, the water quality of the Elbe deteriorated drastically due to industrial wastewater from mining, pulp and chemical industries from the upper reaches of the Elbe. As a result, all the river bathing establishments ceased operations, including the Katerbowsche bathing establishment .

Discussions about the re-establishment of river bathing establishments began around 2000. The Elbe Bathing Day takes place once a year .

The name Badestrasse still reminds of the existence of this Magdeburg bathing establishment .
