Matthias Wrede (born November 10, 1614 , † January 23, 1678 in Magdeburg ) was a merchant and founder of the Wredeschen Poor Foundation .

Life

As a merchant in Magdeburg, Wrede made a considerable fortune. Around 1650 he married Elisabeth Schmidt . At around the same time he acquired the property at Breiter Weg No. 159 from Georg Kühlewein and built the house at the Golden Helm here .

There are said to have been many accidents in his family. At least he died in 1678, a year after his wife, who was 13 years his junior, apparently leaving no children behind.

The Wredesche Armenstiftung was founded from his fortune and was one of the major social institutions in Magdeburg for around 250 years. In 1916 the foundation's capital was given as 646,230.50 marks. Donations should be given to the poor on Matthias and Elisabeth days (February 24 and November 19) for amounts not less than 15 marks.

Another part of the property was used to build the Wredekapelle on the south side of Magdeburg's Ulrichskirche .

The city of Magdeburg had temporarily named a street as Wredestrasse in his honor.
