The New Sudenburger Friedhof is a cemetery in the Magdeburg district of Sudenburg .

location

The cemetery is located west of Sudenburg, at the west end of Braunschweiger Straße, south of Otto-Richter-Straße.

History and layout

The cemetery was created as a cemetery for the evangelical parish of the Sudenburg Sankt-Ambrosius-Kirche , which also operated the old Sudenburg cemetery , which, however, was no longer sufficient due to the increased population. The parish acquired the property, which had been used as arable land up until then, from the Dorendorfschen, Woditschen and Krakow heirs. The construction of the cemetery began in 1896. The cemetery chapel of the New Sudenburg cemetery , which is now a listed building, was built along with the mortuary and a residential building for the cemetery attendant. As far as possible, the work was carried out by members of the parish. The cemetery was consecrated on March 31, 1897 by the superintendent August Trümpelmann. The Lord Mayor of Magdeburg, Gustav Schneider, as well as several city councilors and community members were also present.

On February 6, 1945, many parishioners gathered with Pastor Bruno Spennemann in the cemetery chapel for a memorial service. Due to an air attack , the mourners sought protection in the cellar of the cemetery keeper's house. A bomb hit in the house killed 30 people, including Pastor Spennemann.

Two tombstones originally located in the New Sudenburg Cemetery became part of the St. Gertraud Lapidarium at the beginning of the 21st century . The gravestones of the German military pilot in World War II Fritz Nimmich and the mother Elisabeth, who died in a bombing raid on Magdeburg, and her eleven-year-old son Rolf Tränkel show the different sides of the war.

Even today (as of 2016) the cemetery is operated by the church and belongs to the Protestant parish Magdeburg Süd.

The ground plan of the cemetery extends as a long rectangle in an east-west direction. A linden -lined main path leads through the cemetery from east to west .
