In order to avoid addressing the name of the competition, it was named after the founder on September 15, 1994 However, contrary to Miele's announcement, the long-term jobs that the city had hoped for were not created. The square, located in the former trading port, was named after the former French President Charles de Gaulle by resolution of the city council on May 4, 2006 . The naming after de Gaulle, who was imprisoned in Magdeburg in 1918, was based on applications from the CDU council group in 2003. The CDU pushed for a name after the conservative politician, but was unable to get through with a name in the city center, which was called for at times to rename part of the Leiterstrasse . In contrast to the names of Werner-Heisenberg-Strasse and Niels-Bohr-Strasse in the draft resolution , the naming in the commercial port is not justified. The obvious reason for Bohr and Heisenberg to name scientists at the newly emerging science location was not applicable to de Gaulle.

Litzmannstrasse
Thalmannstrasse
Named after the Cracau district of Magdeburg , through which the street runs as the main street. The naming deviates from the usual scheme. Place names are usually assigned to streets if the streets lead in the direction of the place that gave the name, or if strange place names are used rather arbitrarily. The naming after the place (district) through which the street leads is unusual. Originally there was already a Krakauer Straße nearby in Magdeburg, later Cracauer Straße in the Brückfeld district . During the time of the GDR , however, the buildings there, which had been badly destroyed in the Second World War, disappeared. The street and its name have been abandoned. After the turn of 1989 / 1990 , the after should Communist Ernst Thalmann named Thälmannstraße be renamed. The name Cracauer Strasse was used here.

Today the street would represent the connection between "Bandwohlerstraße" and "Am Cracauer Tor". In the adjacent district Cracau the main road (Thälmannstraße) after the turn was 1989 / 1990 renamed Cracauer road.
