Johann Kaspar Coqui (born January 4, 1747 in Magdeburg ; † June 10, 1824 there ) was a manufacturer and Magdeburg's local politician.

Life

Coqui came from a Huguenot family who immigrated to Magdeburg from France . In Magdeburg the Huguenots who immigrated from France formed the French colony in Magdeburg and the Reformed (Huguenots and Germans) who immigrated from the Palatinate formed the Palatinate colony . Both colonies were not subject to the rest of the municipal administration , but existed with their own administrations as autonomous communities. His father was a hosiery master who was born in Magdeburg. Coqui became a citizen of the Palatinate colony on October 26, 1770 . On November 18, 1770 he married Marie Roux, the widow of the watchmaker David Maquet, who already had three sons; among them the two future entrepreneurs Ludewig David Maquet and Karl Maquet . His marriage to Marie Roux had 5 children. After Marie's death, Coqui married Johanna Christiane Henriette Dürking on December 1, 1801.

Public and economic activities

Although his family were hosiery workers , Coqui applied for a concession to operate a sugar refinery in Magdeburg, which he received from the king on April 29, 1788. Together with his stepson Ludewig David Maquet, he then ran the only business of this type in town, which brought him reputation and prosperity. He also ran other businesses with his sons and step-sons . With an annual income of 12,000 thalers and a fortune of around 700,000 thalers, Coqui was one of the richest citizens of Magdeburg.

In 1788 Coqui was elected mayor of the Palatinate colony. He held this office until the special status of the Palatinate Colony was lifted in 1808. Coqui was a member of the imperial estates during the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia and held the office of presbyter in the Walloon Reformed community .

Coqui owned real estate in Magdeburg, at Alter Markt 11 , and in Buckau . After his death, his wife Henriette Coqui, b. Dürking established the "Johann Kaspar Coquische Foundation for the elderly and poor in Buckau" in Buckau in 1858.

Honor

In his honor, a street ( Coquistraße ) is named after him in Magdeburg-Buckau .
