Stocking knitter is the name for a former occupation. They made knitted goods such as stockings , socks, sleeping hoods, trousers, gloves from sheep's wool, silk , cotton or linen yarnby interlacing them with threads . Knitted stockings only became established with the predominance of Spanish costume from the middle of the 16th century. In 1589, the Protestant English clergyman William Lee invented the knitting machine . After the Edict of Fontainebleau , whichreversedthe equality of the Huguenots with the Catholics in France , the Protestant workers and their tools fled to Germany, among other places, and introduced knitting there.
