General von Bredow

Friedrich Wilhelm Adalbert von Bredow (born May 25, 1814 at Gut Briesen ; † March 3, 1890 ibid) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Adalbert was the son of the Prussian major Friedrich Phillip Leopold Ferdinand von Bredow (1787-1878) and his wife Bernhardine Sophie Emilie, née von Wulffen (1792-1859).

His sisters Emma (1816–1881) was married to the Prussian major general Hermann von Besser (1810–1878), Bernhardine (* 1825) with the later general of the cavalry Ludwig von Salmuth .

Military career

Adalbert von Bredow as a cavalry officer

Bredow received his education in the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . He then joined the Guard Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army on February 15, 1832 as a non-commissioned officer . In 1849 he was given a squadron and in 1856 was transferred as a major to the 1st Dragoons Regiment . As early as 1857 he joined the 3rd Hussar Regiment and in 1859 was appointed commander of the 4th Dragoon Regiment . In 1863 Bredow was promoted to colonel and when the German-Austrian War broke out in 1866 he was given the command of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade , at whose head he took part in the battles near Trautenau and Königgrätz . Upon completion, he was promoted to major general and was given command of the 7th Cavalry Brigade .

In the war against France in 1870 Bredow was assigned to the 5th Cavalry Division . He became famous here when Bredow undertook a death-defying ride with just over five squadrons in the Battle of Vionville-Mars-la-Tour on August 16 . The attack succeeded in driving out a French artillery position and repelling an attack, but the losses amounted to almost half of the soldiers deployed. This prevented the French from further offensive actions and saved the Prussian infantry. Bredow's success was cited in the following decades as an argument for the cavalry's continued legitimacy in modern warfare. Theodor Fontane called him the " Mars La Tour -Bredow".

In January 1871 Bredow was promoted to lieutenant general and was given command of the 18th division on June 11, 1872 . Already on 2 December 1873 Bredow was with pension under award of the Red Eagle , First Class with oak leaves and swords on rings for disposition made. Wilhelm II gave the Dragoon Regiment No. 4 on January 27, 1889 the addition of "von Bredow".

After retiring from military service, Bredow devoted himself to managing his father's property.
