Hermann von Besser

Louis (Ludwig) Emil Hermann von Besser (born March 3, 1810 in Marienwerder , † September 7, 1878 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Hermann was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Ludwig von Besser (1776–1842) and his wife Friederike, née Friese (1788–1875). His grandfather was the Prussian lieutenant general Ehrenreich Wilhelm Gottlieb von Besser (1740-1807).

Military career

Better visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 6, 1827, he was transferred to the 2nd Leib-Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army as a porter officer. There he was promoted to redundant secondary lieutenant in mid-December 1828 and was assigned to the regiment on March 14, 1832. For further training, Besser completed the General War School from October 1833 to July 1836 and was then assigned to the Guard Artillery Brigade until October 1837 . On August 5, 1844 he was transferred to the 6th Cuirassier Regiment and on May 13, 1845 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant . This was followed from the beginning of January 1852 to the beginning of May 1858 as a cavalry captain and squadron chief in the 1st Cuirassier Regiment . Then Besser was reassigned to the 6th Cuirassier Regiment and was promoted to major as a regular staff officer. For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , he was in 1859 commander of the 6th heavy Landwehr-Reiter-Regiment.

On December 24, 1860, Besser was initially charged with the command of the Magdeburg Hussar Regiment No. 10 and on July 24, 1861, he was appointed commander of this regiment. In this position he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in mid-October 1861 and in September 1864 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class, with a crown. His regiment chief Wilhelm von Braunschweis awarded him the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of Henry the Lion . On June 18, 1865 he was promoted to colonel and led his regiment in 1866 during the war against Austria near Münchengrätz , Blumenau and Königgrätz . For his work he received the swords for the Red Eagle Order III on September 20, 1866 . Class with a bow.

In position à la suite of his regiment, Besser was given the command of the 9th Cavalry Brigade on May 18, 1867 , and was appointed brigade commander on June 13, 1867. In approval of his leave request , he was on 8 November 1869 the character as a major general and board for disposition made.

For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Besser was re-used in 1870/71 as commander of the 11th Infantry Brigade and after the peace treaty was awarded the Crown Order II on July 30, 1871 . He died in Potsdam on September 7, 1878.

family

Besser had been married to Emma von Bredow (1816–1881), a daughter of Rittmeister Ferdinand von Bredow and sister of Lieutenant General Adalbert von Bredow , since March 28, 1837 in Berlin . The daughter Elisabeth (* 1855) and the son Bernhard (* 1862) emerged from the marriage.
