Friedrich Sonnemann

Friedrich Sonnemann (born February 6, 1922 in Lindhof , † January 31, 2014 in Burg near Magdeburg ) was a German politician (SED), Lord Mayor of Magdeburg and educator .

Life

Sonnemann was born the son of a carpenter. After attending primary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Bornsen and then worked there in this profession. In 1940 he joined the German Wehrmacht and later the Navy . He became a US prisoner of war, which he spent in Japan until 1947 .

When he returned to Germany, he worked as a journeyman at the Wilhelm Berlin company in Bornsen in 1947/1948 . From 1948 to 1951, a technical college course followed at the engineering school for construction in Osterwieck . In 1951 he joined the SED . Sonnemann worked from 1951 to 1953 as an assistant at the engineering school for construction in Blankenburg . In 1953 he became an assistant at the institute for technical school teacher training, but in the same year he took over the position of department head at the engineering school for construction in Görlitz . He held this position until 1955. From 1954 to 1959 he completed a technical college degree at the Berlin School of Economics in Berlin-Karlshorst as a graduate economist . From 1955 Sonnemann was technical manager and then operations manager at VEB Bau Görlitz. In 1957 he became director of the engineering school for water management and construction in Magdeburg .

On September 26, 1961, he was elected Lord Mayor of Magdeburg as the successor to Philipp Daub (SED) at the constituent city council meeting . However, there was no democratic election by the population or by democratically elected representatives. In 1965 he was recalled due to weaknesses in management . His successor was Werner Herzig (SED), who held the office until the political change in the GDR .

In 1962 he became a member of the district council and in October 1963 a member of the Magdeburg district assembly . After his replacement as Lord Mayor, Sonnemann was again director of the engineering school for water management and construction in Magdeburg, but remained a member of the district assembly until 1976. In the district assembly he was chairman of the permanent commission on complex construction until December 1971, when he was deputy chairman of the commission. In 1973 he received his doctorate. paed. From 1974 he was head of the management department of the GDR Ministry of Construction. From 1976 to 1987 he was deputy head of the main building projects department in the capital of the GDR. From April 1979 to 1990 he was a district councilor for the Berlin district center and chairman of the permanent construction commission of the district assembly. Sonnemann was awarded the GDR Medal of Merit and in 1982 the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1987 he retired, which he spent in Magdeburg.

Sonnemann died at the age of 91.
