List of honorary citizens of Magdeburg

Coat of arms of the city of Magdeburg

The honorary citizenship is the highest honor that the city of Magdeburg awards. The mayor of the city awards it to personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the city by resolution of the city council.

The award of honorary citizenship in Magdeburg can only be verified since the beginning of the 19th century. With the introduction of the Stone Town Order in 1808, the towns of Prussia were given the privilege of granting non-citizens the political rights of citizens. In 1832 a cabinet order determined the honorary right to be a mere show of honor, which excludes participation in the burdens and duties of civil rights.

Since 1814 the following 55 people have been made honorary citizens of Magdeburg. 9 honorary citizens were deprived of honorary citizenship in 1946 and 1990 respectively.

Note: The listing is made chronologically according to the date of award, separated between current and former honorary citizens.
