Igor Alexeyevich Belikov

Igor Alexejewitsch Belikow ( Russian Игорь Алексеевич Беликов ; born February 26, 1941 in Kharkov ; † May 18, 2015 in Luhansk ) was an honorary citizen of Magdeburg and an officer in the Soviet Army . He became known as the lifesaver of a child.

Life

In the mid-1960s, Belikov came to the GDR as a member of the Soviet air force . He was stationed in the 126th Fighter Division near Zerbst . During a visit to Magdeburg's old town on March 13, 1969, he rescued a four-year-old child falling from the fifth floor of a residential building by catching it with his coat. He suffered a slight injury to his wrist. For his deed he received the Golden Badge of Honor from the Society for German-Soviet Friendship , the GDR's Lifesaving Medal ( 1969) and the Patriotic Order of Merit (1985). He was also made an honorary citizen of the city of Magdeburg on July 9, 1977. The act was thematized in the DEFA film A Hero in Seconds and in the children 's book Kathrins Thursday written by Gotthold Gloger . The bronze sculpture set up in Magdeburg, The Rescue Act of Captain Igor Belikow by Heinrich Apel , commemorates the event.

In 1970 Belikov returned to the Soviet Union. He studied at the Moscow Military Academy of Air Forces "JA Gagarin" and became a colonel . As a member of the Soviet troops, he was involved in the invasion of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan . He also served in the Caucasus , Crimea , the Urals , the ČSSR and the Ukrainian SSR . Until 1988 he was the head of the salvage command for the Soviet spaceships at the Baikonur spaceport in the Kazakh SSR . Later he was chief of staff of an air command in the Georgian SSR .

After his retirement in 1991 he lived with his wife in Luhansk , Ukraine . He used his contacts in Magdeburg in the 1990s to organize aid deliveries for a Luhansk hospital.
