When the Musi plays is a live entertainment program on public television with folk and pop music as the focus. The event has been organized in the Austrian municipality of Bad Kleinkirchheim since 1996 . The show is a co-production within the framework of Eurovision and is represented by singers and bands from Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The producer is ORF in cooperation with ZDF (until 2012) and MDR (since 2013). The SF also took part in the event until 2011 .

The summer open air

Since 1996 the summer open air when the music is playing has been taking place in St. Oswald (Bad Kleinkirchheim), initiated by Otto Lobenwein . In the week before the summer open air, guided hikes are organized daily, in which a well-known folk music group takes part. "Off-air" activities are also offered, such as the morning pint on the Sunday after the live broadcast. The program is broadcast live on ORF. According to the Carinthian state government, there are around 15,000 additional overnight stays through the Summer Open Air alone, and the winter edition brings another 5,000 overnight stays to the region.

The 25-year summer open air anniversary planned for 2020 has been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Instead, a best of was shown on television on July 11, 2020 with compilations from the past 25 years.

Incidents

The transmission on July 26, 2014 was canceled after about 80 minutes. The reason was a partial power failure in the area of a transformer station operated by KNG-Kärnten Netz GmbH. Since it was not possible for the KNG employees to rectify the error immediately, the ORF broadcast had to be continued after a short interruption with the recording of the dress rehearsal of the "Wenn die Musipiele" open air, which was recorded the day before.

After switching to a waiting screen, the recording of the dress rehearsal was played on ORF 2 and the recording from the previous year on MDR television first, before the dress rehearsal was also switched to after about ten minutes.

The winter open air

Since 2003, Wenn die Musipiele has also held a Winter Open Air every year . The program is very similar to the summer open air and there are also smaller events (also "off air"), some also with musical accompaniment. The winter edition of the show brings about a third of the income from the summer open air to the box office. In contrast to the summer event, in winter the festival site is in the Bad Kleinkirchheimer Tal between the valley station of the Kaiserburgbahn and the Römerbad.
