The baroque pilgrimage church of Our Lady in Schnals is located in the village of the same name, Our Lady (municipality of Schnals ), the largest town in the Schnalstal in South Tyrol , at an altitude of 1508  m .

history

The Schnalstal was for a long time an important transit point for north-south routes across the Alps (from the Etschtal into the Ötztal , then over the Fernpass to Augsburg ), and pilgrims also came here. In 1304, where the church stands today, a small statue of Mother Mary with the baby Jesus was found (carved from boxwood , about 13 cm high and made around the year 1300). Today it is believed that pilgrims brought them, possibly as a kind of souvenir from the Holy Land. Two years later, in 1306, a chapel was built at the site. The church is thus one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in Tyrol . An indulgence was granted in 1312. The chapel was enlarged in 1349 and a Marian altar was consecrated. The bishop of the Diocese of Chur certified repeated miracles in 1366. The construction of the Gothic church was completed in 1407. Schnals became a parish between 1445 and 1449.

The parish was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1765, the interior furnishings come from this time. The top of the bell tower (onion) was completed in 1797 and replaced the Gothic closure. In 1881 the interior of the church (vault) was painted in the Nazarene style.
