Karthaus ( Italian Certosa ) is a fraction of the municipality Schnals in South Tyrol ( Italy ). The place is on the orographic right side of the Schnalstal at an altitude of 1323  m .

history

The origins of the village go back to the Carthusian monastery Allerengelberg , founded in the 14th century . In 1782 the monastery was abolished as part of the Josephine reforms and subsequently sold. Farmers and craftsmen then settled in the buildings - the village of Karthaus emerged from the former monastery.

On November 21, 1924, at 10.30 p.m., a fire broke out in a straw warehouse in the stable of the Rose Inn. Italian construction workers who were building a financial barracks in the valley were staying there at the time. The trigger was the careless handling of the burning cigarette butts that the workers simply tossed into the straw before going to bed. At 11 p.m. the whole town was on fire. Two people and many pets were burned. Of the 38 houses, only three were spared from the flames.

The former monastery complexes, which were all in all well preserved up to the time of the fire, were largely destroyed. However, the remains of the monastery offer a very interesting overall impression after the restoration measures of the historical monuments office and after the village renovation carried out from 1974 to 1980.
