Donnersbachklamm

The Donnersbachklamm in the municipality of Donnersbach is a gorge on the northern waste of the Rottenmanner and Wölzer Tauern in the Ennstal and has been a natural monument of Styria since 1991 .

Emergence

When the last great ice age ended around 12,000 years ago, the melting glaciers formed gorges in the quartz-phyllite rock of the Niedere Tauern . Over the millennia, the flowing water of the Donnersbach dug its way through the soft rock and created this gorge.

history

For centuries, until the road was built, wood had been transported down the meltwater-bearing Donnersbach stream. This type of transport was called trifting . For this purpose, a Triftsteig was built along the Donnersbachklamm in order to be able to intervene when the wood becomes blocked. A rake was built at the gorge exit, where the gorge widens again. Drifting wood and intervening in blockages in the raging and wild water was a very dangerous job. In 1936 this Triftsteig was also opened to visitors, and in 1961 the last wooden walk took place. The path has been expanded several times over the years and has been called the Klammsteig ever since .

The starting point of this approximately two-hour, easy hike is the Gasthof Leitner in Donnersbach. The marked hiking trail leads south along the Donnersbach. Shortly afterwards the path leads to the Klammsteig . After about a quarter of an hour's walk, you reach the part of the gorge that is protected as a natural monument. There is a reconstruction of an original woodcutter's hut as well as a model of a trift rake. Information boards have been set up along the former Triftsteig. At the so-called Klammsteigruhe and the Felstunnel you leave the Klammsteig. The hiking trail leads back to the starting point via a forest path.
