Marianne Abderhalden (born April 1, 1986 in Grabs , married Marianne Thöni-Abderhalden ) is a former Swiss ski racer . She is the younger sister of Jörg Abderhalden , the most successful athlete in the Swiss national sport of wrestling , and specialized in the downhill and super-G disciplines.

biography

From December 2001 Abderhalden competed in FIS races , two years later the first appearances in the European Cup followed . With the Swiss championship title in the combination and the Swiss junior championship title in the downhill she first became known to a broader public in 2005. In 2006 the junior championship titles followed in the downhill and super-G.

At the Junior World Championships in 2006 Abderhalden won the gold medal in the downhill and the silver medal in the combination . She was therefore allowed to take part in the World Cup finals in Åre in mid-March , where she came in last. The Swiss Sports Aid Foundation chose her as the young athlete of the year 2006.

In the 2006/07 season Abderhalden could not confirm this performance for the time being, as she suffered from a partial tear on the Achilles tendon . She could not put full weight on her foot and therefore had to limit training. With good results in the European Cup and FIS races, she secured a place in the World Cup. On March 9, 2008, she was 21st in the super combined in Crans-Montana and won her first World Cup points. As a result, she lost contact to the top of the world due to numerous minor injuries. She clearly missed qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympics . So her result on March 6, 2010, when she finished third in the Crans-Montana World Cup downhill run was all the more surprising.

The 2011/12 season ended early for her. She was injured on the Lake Louise descent at the beginning of December , then had to take a break for several weeks and finally ended the season for good in January due to a cruciate ligament operation. In the following season 2012/13 she reached the second World Cup podium of her career as third of the second downhill of Lake Louise. A year later she took second place in the same place.

She celebrated her only World Cup victory in December 2013 in Val-d'Isère , again in a downhill race. In March 2015, she announced her retirement at the end of the season because her knee could no longer withstand the stresses of top-class sport.

Private

On August 6, 2011 Abderhalden married her friend Pascal Kaufmann. It then started under the double name Kaufmann-Abderhalden until the divorce in 2014. She then married Andreas Thöni and took on the double name Thöni-Abderhalden.
