Silvan Zurbriggen (born August 15, 1981 in Brig in the Valais ) is a former Swiss ski racer . He was a slalom specialist at the beginning of his career , but over the years he developed into an all-rounder. His greatest successes were second place in slalom at the 2003 World Cup and third place in super combined at the 2010 Winter Olympics .

biography

At the age of three, Zurbriggen, who is distantly related to Pirmin , Heidi and Elia Zurbriggen , went on skis for the first time; he competed in his first races when he was nine years old. At the age of 15 he was accepted at the ski school in Stams, Austria . In 1998, after being accepted into the Swiss-Ski C-team, he returned to Switzerland to continue his studies in Engelberg . There he completed his business diploma in 2001.

Zurbriggen contested the first FIS races in November 1997, the first victory at this stage was another two years in coming. He was used in the European Cup from December 2000. At the 2001 World Junior Championships in Verbier , he finished second in the downhill. The following year he won three European Cup races. He made his debut in the World Cup on January 21, 2002 in the slalom in Kitzbühel , where he was unable to qualify for the second round.

Zurbriggen scored World Cup points for the first time on November 24, 2002, when he was 13th in the Park City slalom . With further good performances, he qualified for the 2003 World Cup in St. Moritz . There he unexpectedly won the silver medal in slalom, behind the Croatian Ivica Kostelić . In the 2003/04 season he was able to establish himself at the top of the world, with a fifth place each in the slalom and in the combination of Kitzbühel as the best results. On December 13, 2004, he achieved his first podium finish in a World Cup race as second in the slalom of Sestriere . Fifth on the downhill from Bormio two weeks later, he also showed his talent as an all-rounder.

During a training fall in August 2005, Zurbriggen suffered broken ribs and a concussion. Due to the shortened preparation time, he could not improve in the following 2005/06 season ; a sixth place remained his best result. The 2006/07 season went better with eight placements among the top ten, including two podiums in the super combinations of Wengen and Kvitfjell . On the descent from Val Gardena on December 15, 2007, Zurbriggen fell badly and tore a cruciate ligament . For this reason, no more races could be contested for the rest of the season.

In the 2008/09 season Zurbriggen made a successful comeback (when he first appeared on November 16 in the Levi slalom , he finished fourth) and he established himself at the top of the world, especially in the combinations. After finishing third in Wengen, he won the classic Hahnenkamm combination from Kitzbühel on January 25, 2009 and thus celebrated his first World Cup victory. In the combined World Cup ranking he had to admit defeat to Carlo Janka . Zurbriggen showed consistently good performances in the 2009/10 season , especially in slalom; with two second places he was ultimately third in the discipline ranking. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , he won the bronze medal in the super combined.

In the winter of 2010/11 , Zurbriggen was particularly noticeable with good results in downhill and super-G. On December 18, 2010, he won the downhill run from Val Gardena (where he had been seriously injured three years earlier). At the end of the year he led the overall World Cup standings until he was clearly overtaken by Ivica Kostelić in January. Finally Zurbriggen finished sixth in the overall World Cup and fourth in the Downhill World Cup. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he did not win a medal. Zurbriggen did not contest any more slaloms in the 2011/12 World Cup season . The specialization in the fast disciplines did not bring the desired success, with the exception of a third place in the combination of Kitzbühel. Also in the two following winters his performance stagnated, which is why he was increasingly used in the European Cup. He was unable to qualify for the 2014 Olympic Games, but won the European Cup downhill classification with three wins in winter 2013/14. He resigned at the end of the 2014/15 season.

One of Zurbriggens hobbies is breeding Eringer cows .
