Manuela Mölgg (born August 28, 1983 in Bruneck ) is a former Italian ski racer . The South Tyrolean mainly competed in the giant slalom and slalom disciplines . Her older brother Manfred Mölgg is also a member of the Italian national ski team.

biography

Mölgg started skiing at the age of four. Supported by her uncle Marco Kaneider and her trainer Roman Erlacher, she made the leap into the South Tyrolean national team in 1999. She has been a member of the Italian national ski team since 2000: from 2000 to 2002 the C-team, from 2002 the A-team. Mölgg competed in FIS races from December 1998, her first appearance in the European Cup followed in February 2000. She made her debut in the World Cup on December 15, 2000 in the giant slalom in Limone Piemonte , where she was unable to qualify for the second run. She won a World Cup point for the first time on November 29, 2002, finishing 30th in the giant slalom in Aspen . Exactly one month later, she achieved her first top 10 place with 9th place in the slalom on Semmering . In the following 2003/04 World Cup season , two twelfth places remained their best results.

On November 28, 2004 Mölgg surprised with the second place in the slalom of Aspen behind the Finn Tanja Poutiainen , which was synonymous with the first World Cup podium place. In the two following winters Mölgg was only able to build on these performances sporadically and was twice in the top ten. In the winter of 2007/08 she was twice second and once third in the World Cup, with which she finished third in the giant slalom discipline. Several times Mölgg was only denied a victory by a few hundredths of a second or she lost a lead after the first run. She then had the image of a racer who simply cannot win. An example of this was the 2008/09 season when she finished second in the World Cup giant slalom in La Molina , 0.02 seconds behind, or in the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , when she led the slalom after the first run and in second run shortly before the finish.

Mölgg was also denied a win in the 2009/10 World Cup season ; the best result was a second place in the giant slalom in Lienz , five hundredths of a second behind. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , she missed the top 10 in both slalom and giant slalom. At the start of the 2010/11 season , she finished third in the giant slalom in Sölden . In the further course of the winter she had a total of seven failures in a total of 15 starts. Two sixth places at the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen were synonymous with the best results of her career in championships. In the rather mixed World Cup season 2011/12 there were four results among the top ten, but also eight failures.

The failure rate remained high in the following three winters: Mölgg was eliminated in almost half of all World Cup races in which she started, with top 10 results being rare. She could not qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics. In the 2015/16 World Cup winter , an improvement gradually became apparent. For example, on November 27, 2015, she finished fourth in the giant slalom in Aspen. After almost six years without a podium finish, Mölgg reached third place in the giant slalom at Semmering on December 27, 2016. In the further course of the 2016/17 season , three more top 10 results and a sixth place in the giant slalom of the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz were added.

At the beginning of the 2017/18 World Cup season , Mölgg almost regained the strength of previous years: In the giant slaloms in Sölden, Killington and Courchevel , she finished third. However, she was unable to win a medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang : In the giant slalom, she led somewhat surprisingly after the first run, but completely slowed down the second run and fell back to eighth place. On March 18, 2018 Mölgg announced her retirement from ski racing after 17 years and a total of 283 world cup races.
