Werner Heel (born March 23, 1982 in Merano ) is a former Italian ski racer . The South Tyrolean specialized in the Downhill and Super-G disciplines. He won three races in the World Cup.

biography

Heel grew up in Walten in the municipality of St. Leonhard in Passeier . He first drew international attention in 1995 when he won the giant slalom of the Whistler Cup . In 2004 he won the Italian Super G championship in Caspoggio . Due to numerous injuries, he had to take frequent breaks. In the 2004/05 season Werner Heel delivered his best performance in the European Cup . He achieved third place in the downhill runs in Roccaraso and Bad Kleinkirchheim and fourth place in the Super-G in Tarvisio .

Heel made his debut in the World Cup on December 28, 2001 on the Pista Stelvio in Bormio , where he reached 37th place. In the 2006/07 season he achieved his first top 10 place in ninth place on the downhill in Kvitfjell and finished twelfth in Lake Louise . In 2007 he took part in the Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre , Sweden , but could not finish his run in the super combined. In the Super-G he came in 27th place.

The 2007/08 season was excellent for the South Tyrolean athlete . On November 24, 2007 he reached sixth place in the downhill in Lake Louise. He won his first World Cup race on February 29, 2008 in the downhill in Kvitfjell. Werner Heel confirmed his potential the next day and achieved third place on the same slope. In the 2008/09 season Heel won the Super-Gs in Val Gardena and Åre and took second place in the Super-G World Cup behind Aksel Lund Svindal . At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , he finished seventh in the downhill and 14th in the Super-G. At the season finale in Åre on March 15, 2009, he won the team competition with the Italian team, which is only part of the Nations Cup. The 2009/10 World Cup season was also successful, but without a win . Heel made it onto the podium three times and reached third place in the Downhill World Cup. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , he just missed a medal after finishing 12th in the downhill in the Super-G with 4th place.

Heel remained without a World Cup podium in the 2010/11 season . His best result was a fifth place in the downhill from Wengen , another four times he went into the top ten. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he was 8th in the Super-G, but only 22nd in the downhill. After Heel had only finished in the top 20 in two World Cup races in the 2011/12 season , he achieved his first podium position in almost three years on December 14, 2012 as third in the Super-G in Val Gardena. The last time he was on the podium was on March 3, 2015 at the Kvitfjell Super-G. In the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons he finished in the points twice, and only once in the 2017/18 season. In winter 2018/19, a 30th place was his best result. Heel contested his last World Cup race on March 2, 2019 on the descent from Kvitfjell.
