Patrick Thaler (born March 23, 1978 in Bolzano ) is a former Italian ski racer and three-time Olympian (2006, 2010, 2014). The special discipline of the South Tyrolean was the slalom , at the beginning of his career he also competed in the giant slalom .
Career
Thaler skied for the first time at the age of two and became Italian champion in his age group as a child. He was accepted into the South Tyrolean national team in 1993 and joined the C-team of the Italian Winter Sports Association two years later . In 1997 he was called up to the Italian senior team.
After his first successes in FIS races , Patrick Thaler started in the European Cup for the first time in January 1997 . He celebrated his first victories in 2003 and won the slalom classification in the 2003/04 season . Thaler took part in the Junior World Championships in 1996 , 1997 and 1998 and in 1997 won the silver medal in the giant slalom. In the slalom races he was eliminated every time. On March 8, 1997, Thaler competed in the World Cup for the first time. He won his first points on January 6, 1998 in the giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , where he finished 23rd. Initially, Thaler competed almost exclusively in giant slalom in the World Cup, and since the 2002/2003 season almost exclusively in slalom. In both disciplines, he was initially only rarely able to qualify for the second round. This changed from the 2004/05 season : after he had driven his last World Cup giant slalom in January 2005, he achieved a place among the fastest ten for the first time on February 27, 2005 with eighth place in the slalom of Kranjska Gora .
2006 Winter Olympics
After further top 10 results in the World Cup, Thaler took part in the 2006 Olympic Games in slalom, but was eliminated in the first round. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre he was also unsuccessful, and here, too, he could not finish the first slalom run. On January 25, 2009, Thaler achieved his first podium in the World Cup when he finished third in the slalom in Kitzbühel behind the two French riders Julien Lizeroux and Jean-Baptiste Grange . Three weeks later, he was the only one of the four Italians who did not fail to finish seventh at the 2009 World Cup in Val-d'Isère .
From the beginning of 2010, Thaler was unable to match the results of the last few years. In addition to a failure at the 2010 Winter Olympics , he was less and less able to qualify for a second round in the World Cup. In the 2010/2011 World Cup season, he only managed to qualify for the second run once, which is why he was unable to qualify for the 2011 World Cup within the Italian team. After two rather unsuccessful years, Thaler has been among the world's best again since the beginning of the 2011/2012 season . In the first three World Cup slaloms of the winter, he was always among the fastest seven. Four more times he was among the fastest 15, with which he achieved his best result so far in the Slalom World Cup as 16th.
The World Cup season 2012/13 started Thaler with a fifth place in slalom in Levi - his best World Cup result since January 2009. On 15 December 2013, the program was achieved with 3rd place in Val d'Isere, the second podium result of his career. Another third place was added on January 24, 2014 in Kitzbühel.
2014 Winter Olympics
At the Olympic Games in 2014 he was eliminated in the first slalom run. In winter 2014/15 was a fifth place his best result, as in the following season 2015/16 . After a sixth place was his best result in the 2016/17 season , he lost the connection to the top of the world in the following winter, as he was eliminated in seven of eight races in the first round or did not qualify for the second round.
He contested his last World Cup race in Schladming on January 23, 2018, and on the same day the 39-year-old declared his active career over.
