biography

Resi Stiegler is the daughter of the former Austrian ski racer and Olympic champion Josef Stiegler and grew up in Jackson Hole in the US state of Wyoming and in Lienz in East Tyrol . She speaks several languages, but no German. She started skiing at the age of two and drove her first races at the age of six. After success in the youth field, she had her first start in the Nor-Am Cup in December 2000, and since November 2001 she has also competed in the European Cup again and again .

In her second season in the Nor-Am Cup she won her first race and took second place in the slalom classification. With these achievements, Stiegler was allowed to start in the World Cup from the 2002/03 season . In her first race, a knockout slalom in Sestriere on December 15, 2002, she was not yet able to qualify for the finals, but a week later she reached eleventh place in the Lenzerheide slalom . At her first world championship in St. Moritz in 2003 , she reached tenth place in the combined and 19th place in slalom, and at the 2003 Junior World Championship she won the bronze medal in slalom and combined. In February 2004 she achieved her first top 10 result in the World Cup and in the 2004/05 season she finally established herself in the slalom world class. In the World Cup she reached three top 10 placings, at the 2005 World Championships in Bormio she finished sixth in slalom and at the Junior World Championships she won silver in combination.

In the 2005/06 World Cup season , Stiegler's best result was fourth place in the Åre slalom and her first Olympic participation in Turin in 2006 ended with an eleventh place in the combination and a twelfth place in the slalom. In the winter of 2006/07 she drove in the World Cup in two super combinations and a slalom under the top five and at the 2007 World Championships in Åre she finished eighth in the slalom. In April 2007 she became the US champion in slalom and giant slalom.

At the start of the 2007/08 World Cup season , Stiegler finished fourth in the slalom on the Reiteralm and then made it into the top ten twice before she fell heavily in the giant slalom in Lienz on December 28, 2007 and broke her left forearm and right shin tore a collateral ligament and a tear in the cruciate ligament in the right knee. The season was over for them. In the summer of 2008 she broke her leg again, which is why she was only able to make her comeback in February 2009 at the World Cup in Val-d'Isère . Stiegler took 19th place in the slalom. Shortly thereafter, however, her return to the ski circuit was interrupted by a foot injury, which is why the start at the World Cup was her only appearance this winter.

After Stiegler failed to qualify for the second round in the first two World Cup races of the 2009/10 season , her career suffered the next serious setback on November 19, 2009. When she fell during giant slalom training in Copper Mountain , she suffered a fractured thigh and shin in her left leg, which is why this season for Stiegler ended prematurely. On November 28, 2010, she made her new comeback in the World Cup Slalom in Aspen , where she finished 25th, winning World Cup points for the first time in three years. Her best World Cup result in the 2010/11 season was 15th place in the slalom of Špindlerův Mlýn on March 12th. In the Nor-Am Cup, she took the podium twice a few days later. In the slalom of the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she reached 19th place, making her the best American woman.

In the course of the 2011/12 season, Stiegler slowly approached the world's best. One month after winning three races in the Nor-Am Cup, on March 4, 2012, when she finished second in the slalom in Ofterschwang, she not only achieved the best World Cup placement in more than four years, but also her first podium finish. Five days later she achieved her second best World Cup result of the 2011/12 season with 13th place in the giant slalom in Åre , but during the World Cup final in Schladming she was injured again in the team competition on March 16. She suffered injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in her left knee.
