Career
Beginnings
Wendler is a trained freight forwarder . At the age of 21, he joined his father's shipping company and had to pay three million euros in debt. He tried to balance the debt with income from two sex shops and appearances in discos and beer tents, but had to file for personal bankruptcy in 2002 . In 1998 the singer and radio presenter Jürgen Renfordt ( WDR 4 ) helped him to get his first record deal. In 1999 he founded the record company CNI Records together with his future wife Claudia Norberg while the bankruptcy proceedings were still ongoing . Successful titles by Wendler include a. She loves the DJ , Nina and I Don't Know . Wendler writes his songs and texts himself under the pseudonym Mic Skowy , the composition is done in collaboration with the producer Hermann Niesig .
She loves the DJ and reality show appearances
After a long-term contract with his own, smaller record company CNI Records, he switched to the record label Ariola in 2007 . In the first two years at Ariola, he sold over 400,000 CD units. At the end of April 2007, Wendler published a new edition of the song She loves the DJ and reached number 27 in the German single charts . The album Best of Vol. 1 was released on June 29, 2007 . On April 4, 2008, his album Undefeated was released. In September 2008 he was awarded gold for more than 100,000 units of the album Best of Vol.1 sold . In 2009 he also received gold for undefeated .
In 2010 he published his biography Faust des Schlagers , in which he settled accounts with everyone who had disappointed him. In September 2011 he and Markus Krampe opened the “Tanzlokal Nina” in Bottrop , where pop singers regularly perform live. At the end of 2012, Wendler's manager Markus Krampe announced that he was no longer looking after Wendler because of “irreconcilable, fundamentally different views on future projects”. A year later, the two renewed their collaboration. Another branch of the discotheque was opened in Cologne in October 2014 . The self-proclaimed "King of Pop hits" and his manager Markus Krampe went their separate ways again in 2015 after separating in 2013. Wendler gave his shares in this discotheque to Markus Krampe at the beginning of 2015, who thus became the sole operator of the place. In the same year, the Wesel tax office in North Rhine-Westphalia imposed a tax refund on Wendler.
In addition to his singing activity, Wendler appeared in a number of television formats. The Wendler-Clan (2010), a six-part documentary soap with and about Michael Wendler, which was broadcast on Sat.1 . From January 17, 2014, Wendler took part in the reality show Ich bin ein Star - Get me out of here! on RTL, which he left after a few days at his own request. At the same time, his single Our tent appeared on Westerland . In the same year he took part in the show Promi Big Brother : The Experiment and took fifth place there, he also took part in Schlag den Star and was defeated by Axel Stein . In 2015, Wendler took part in the show I'm a Star - Let me back in! part and moved into the final broadcast by receiving the most calls. During the filming of the show on July 14, 2015, he broke his right wrist, which is why he had to undergo an operation. He later sued the production company for damages. In 2016 he took part in the RTL show Let's Dance and took 9th place with his dance partner Isabel Edvardsson .
Three more albums followed on the Telamo label , all of which reached chart positions. In 2017 he founded the company "Cape Music Inc." in Cape Coral, Florida, where he is employed as a singer and which has been officially led by his then 17-year-old daughter Adeline Norberg since 2018. At his first concert in the USA in front of 400 listeners in the Cape Coral Yacht Club in 2018, Wendler appeared as the “German King of Pop”.
Comeback on reality TV
In 2019, manager Markus Krampe took over management from Michael Wendler for the third time after previous separations. In the same year, Wendler again received increased media attention through his relationship with Laura Müller (* 2000), who was 28 years his junior . With her he joined Goodbye Germany from March 2019 ! The emigrants up. In addition, the couple took part in the reality show Das Sommerhaus der Stars - Fight of Celebrity Couples on RTL in summer 2019 . At the beginning of 2020 the documentaries Wendler, Laura, Claudia - the DJ and the women and Laura and the Wendler - Totally in love with America will follow on TVNOW .
Wendler's single Egal reached the German single charts at number 50 for the first time at the end of February 2020 - two and a half years after its first release . The single stayed in the top 100 for five weeks and peaked at number 43 in the second week. At the beginning of May 2020, Wendler and Oliver Pocher appeared in the RTL game show Because they don't know what will happen against Barbara Schöneberger and Günther Jauch .
At the beginning of April 2020, the RTL group announced that Müller and Wendler were getting married in 2020 and that the preparations and the wedding would be accompanied exclusively on RTL , VOX and TVNOW. Almost three weeks later, the couple announced the engagement via RTL and Instagram . In the course of this, the documentary soap Laura and the Wendler was created - Now we're getting married! (TVNOW / VOX). The couple were officially married in Florida in June 2020 .
In mid-August 2020, RTL announced that Michael Wendler would be a member of the jury for the 18th season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar .
insolvency
His record company CNI Records and Musikverlag OHG filed for bankruptcy in August 2016. In this context, the Duisburg public prosecutor's office issued penalty orders against Michael Wendler and Claudia Norberg in February 2020 (Az .: 143 Js 181/16). Michael Wendler is accused of aiding and abetting the foreclosure in unity with bankruptcy in two cases. According to the public prosecutor, Claudia Norberg transferred trademark rights and rights to pieces of music to her then husband Michael Wendler in 2014 prior to the bankruptcy "in the knowledge of an impending foreclosure and in the knowledge of an impending insolvency". After both Wendler and Norberg had initially lodged an objection to the penalty orders, Norberg subsequently accepted the sentence to a prison sentence of one year on probation. The court hearing before the Dinslaken district court, scheduled for July 7, 2020, concerns Michael Wendler alone. As Michael Wendler confirmed in an interview, he has been officially insolvent since the submission of affidavits in the middle and end of 2019 .
Private
Michael Wendler and Claudia Norberg have a daughter, Adeline (* 2002). After 20 years of relationship, he married his partner in a civil registry office on Sylt in March 2009 , in church on Mallorca in April 2009 and then took the name Norberg as his family name. In 2016, Wendler moved with his wife and daughter with a three-year US “P-Visa” (nonimmigrant visa for athletes, artists, entertainers) to Cape Coral in Florida . A television team from the VOX-Dokusoap Goodbye Germany! The family accompanied the emigrants . In October 2018, Wendler and his wife announced their separation after 29 years of relationship with nine years of marriage. The couple has been divorced since May 13, 2020.
Wendler has been in a relationship with Laura Müller (* 2000) since October 2018 . The couple married in June 2020; since then she has had the surname Norberg .
Brand dispute "Der Wendler"
At the beginning of March 2012 Michael Wendler was sued for not being allowed to perform under the title "Der Wendler". The singer Frank Wendler from the Ruhr area had already secured the rights to the brand "Der Wendler" in 2008 and, after Michael Wendler had previously wanted to forbid him from using the name Der Wendler , demanded that he be banned from performing under this name. After the first court instance initially decided that, despite the registered naming rights for Frank Wendler, both singers were allowed to perform under this name, as Michael Wendler had been successful under this name since 1998 and there was no risk of confusion between the two singers, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court had the appeal On May 21, 2013, a different judgment was made: According to this, neither of the two singers should henceforth claim the surname “Wendler” without an addition. In addition, the nationally lesser known Frank Wendler has to delete his word mark “Der Wendler”.
Further litigation
Two German women bought the naming rights from Wendler for 40,000 euros in order to run a "Wendler fan café" on Mallorca. After Wendler's additional claims for more than 100,000 euros, they had to file for bankruptcy. In a comparison that became public through a television documentary, Wendler returned their 40,000 euros to the operators. In further disputes with Wendler, which were documented in the RTL show Wendler - Christopher Posch Spezial , no agreement was reached. The long-time director of a Wendler fan club, for example, did not get her car back, which Wendler had given her in front of thousands of spectators and later reclaimed.
In a civil proceeding since 2013 under the file number 8 O 49/13, the company of his ex-manager Manuel Pielka is suing for license claims, commissions for 80 appearances and contractual penalties against the pop singer and the company run by his wife (value in dispute almost 57,000 euros). In 2014, Claudia Norberg, as a partner in CNI, was sentenced by the Duisburg Regional Court to pay 118,581.42 euros plus interest for commissions from ex-manager Heiko Schulte-Siering that had been outstanding since 2008. In addition, a criminal investigation was announced. Due to the lawsuit of his ex-manager Manuel Pielka, a bailiff seized Wendler's pocket in July 2018 before a stage appearance .
The agency MPM Music, which organized performances for Wendler, sued Wendler, his wife Claudia Norberg and their company "CNI Records" before the Duisburg Regional Court (Az .: 10 O 364/15) for payment of around 34,000 euros from exclusive booking contracts.
The party singer is currently in a legal dispute with GEMA (Berlin Regional Court 16 O 343/17) because it has blocked payments for 176 Wendler songs. GEMA justifies the ban with “justified doubts about the right to distribute” (Section 9 (2) of GEMA's distribution plan).
