Elisabeth Strupp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth Strupp (in some sources also Maria Elisabeth Strupp ), wife of the Gelnhausen pastor Johannes Strupp, was executed as a witch on August 3, 1599 in Gelnhausen . Because of the interrogation records that have been preserved, her case has special significance in the history of the witch hunt.

To person

The origin, date and name of birth of Elisabeth Strupp are not known. She had several children and was the widow of the Protestant pastor Johannes Strupp. Her father-in-law was Peter Strupp, a former Premonstratensian chorister, who from 1543 was an authoritative reformer for Gelnhausen and the first Protestant pastor at the Marienkirche there.

Witch trial

According to the trial files, Elisabeth Strupp was denounced by the housewife Barbara Scherer, who was accused of being a witch herself and was executed at the stake a few days before her on July 20, 1599. In the witch trial , Elisabeth Strupp was wrongly accused of stealing part of the church treasure. The prosecutor was the mayor of Gelnhausen, Johannes Koch. It is said that Elisabeth Strupp criticized the witch hunt and was thus in opposition to the mayor. On August 3, 1599, she was beheaded, which is seen as a "grace" to the otherwise common cremation.

reception

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Strupp trial, a memorial with the title “Given Elisabeth Strupp” was erected in front of the west portal of the Marienkirche in Gelnhausen in 1999 (idea by Fanna Kolarova, executed by Karl Menzen).

At the Landeskirchentag 2006, a play about the Strupp case was performed: "'She announced that she was a sorceress' - The Elisabeth Strupp case".

In 2013 the heavy metal band Rage featuring Lingua Mortis Orchestra released the music title Cleansed By Fire , which is based on the Strupp case. The associated video was shot in and around the Gelnhausen Marienkirche and on the nearby Obermarkt.
