The deep sea islands (Bathylagidae, Greek bathys = 'deep'; lagos = 'hare') are a family of golden salmon-like (Argentiniformes). The fish live in all oceans from the northern cold temperate zone to Antarctica.

features

The 11 to 26 centimeters long fish are elongated, usually dark in color and in most cases have large eyes. Postcleithra and mesocoracoid (bones in the shoulder girdle) are missing. An adipose fin may be present or absent. The pectoral fins sit ventrally (on the abdomen). The fish have 38 to 55 vertebrae and two gill trap rays .

Systematics

There are 8 genera and 23 species:

Bathylagus antarcticus
Bathylagus euryops

The American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson puts the family in his standard work Fishes of the World as a subfamily to the Microstomatidae . In most classifications, however, they have the rank of an independent family. According to current phylogenetic studies, the deep-sea insects are even the sister group of all other golden salmon species.

Fossil record

A deep-sea stint described as Bathylagus angelensis is known from the Miocene of California .
