Leptochilichthys (Greek, leptos = thin, cheilos = lip, ichthys = fish) is a genus of deep-sea fish from the black-headed family(Alepocephalidae). It contains only three species that are rare and little explored.

features

The species, which can grow up to 31 centimeters long, have a very elongated and edentulous upper jaw (maxillary), while the palate and lower jaw are dentate. The gill traps are long and numerous, a shoulder bag apparatus is missing. The head can (in Leptochilichthys agassizii ) make up to 40% of the standard length, the tongue is absent, a supra-perculum is present, as is a single supramaxillary .

There are 47 to 58 vertebrae and 13 Branchiostegal rays . The dorsal fin has 11 to 21 rays, the anal fin 11 to 18 rays, the pectoral fins 7 to 16 rays and the pelvic fins 6 to 11 rays.

Distribution and way of life

The fish live in the eastern Atlantic , in the western Indian Ocean and in the eastern and western Pacific mostly in the deep sea below 1000 meters. They are rare. Brood care does not take place.

Systematics

The genus was first described in 1899 by Samuel Garman and originally counted to the suborder Alepocephaloidei , Norman Bertram Marshall placed it in a family of its own in 1966. Sazonov and Williams put them back in 2001, followed by Nelson , who leads them in 2006 as part of the black heads (Alepocephalidae), a family of the Alepocephaloidei.

The genus contains three species:
