The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in the Neuwied district of Irlich in Rhineland-Palatinate was built from 1831 to 1835 in the forms of late classicism and, as a widely visible landmark of Irlich, brings an unusual, almost Italian touch to the Rhine landscape through this style. This church replaced the St. George's Chapel, mentioned as early as 1200. The Catholic Church belongs to the dean's office Rhein-Wied in the diocese of Trier .

history

St. George's Chapel

The first church in Irlich dates back to the time when Irlich belonged to the Archdiocese of Bamberg (until 1422). The St. George's Chapel was probably built around the year 1200, the first documented mention of the chapel comes from the 14th century. The name of the patron saint of this chapel, St. Georg , indicates that the chapel was donated by the Archdiocese of Bamberg, St. Georg is one of the two patron saints of Bamberg Cathedral . In 1422 Irlich came to the Archdiocese of Trier . The chapel was only raised to a parish church in 1662 under the Archbishop of Trier von der Leyen . Until then, Irlich was under the parish of Feldkirchen.

In 1775, the parish asked the Counts of Wied-Neuwied and Wied-Runkel to build a new house of worship as principal tithe lords . The chapel, which was now called a church and was also renewed and expanded several times, was dilapidated and too small for the 670 believers. The counts did not see themselves as responsible because Irlich was owned by the Electorate of Trier. Kurtrier, in turn, was of the opinion that the tithe lords were required to build and repair the ship of the parish churches in the archbishopric diocese. In 1790 the community of Irlich sued the archbishop's clerical court in Ehrenbreitstein about the new building and responsibility for assuming the construction costs. The dispute was not settled until 1832 after the Rhineland had become Prussian . The princes were ordered to bear the main costs of the new building, the prince zu Wied-Neuwied was granted the rulership of the principality of Wied, including Irlich.

St. George's Church, which had been vacant since 1836, was demolished in 1894.

The Counts of Wied-Neuwied, and thus also the inhabitants of the county, belonged to the Protestant faith for over 200 years. Irlich as an Electorate of Trier and lying in an enclave enclosed by the county , had remained Catholic during the Reformation. The Count's residence was less than half an hour's drive from Irlich. In 1784 the Counts of Wied were made prince.

The planning and construction of the new church was carried out by the princely wiedische building inspector Johann Heinrich Hartmann in convincingly clear forms of late classicism . The foundation stone was laid in 1833, the shell was finished by 1835, and the church was consecrated in 1836. A roof turret was placed above the organ stage because the money for a tower was lacking . Consecrated on October 3, 1843 by the Trier bishop Arnoldi . The patron saints of the new church are the apostles Peter and Paul .

The bell tower was then built in 1914/15. The roof turret was struck by lightning while the tower was being built.

During the Second World War the church was badly hit by bombing raids in 1944 and 1945, the roof was completely destroyed, the masonry of the ship and the tower damaged. The first repairs were carried out in 1949, the war damage removal was completed in 1966. Between 2003 and 2006 the church and tower were extensively renovated and restored.

On August 24, 2008, the retired Archbishop of Cuzco and Council Father of all session periods of the Second Vatican Council, Alcides Mendoza Castro, celebrated his 50th anniversary as a bishop in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, as the archbishop had a long-term friendship with the then parish community Irlich - Feldkirchen and whose pastor Stephan Augst connected.

On October 21, 2012, the 350th anniversary of the parish St. Peter and Paul in Irlich, which was established in 1662 by the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Karl Kaspar von der Leyen , was celebrated in a pontifical office with Bishop Stephan Ackermann .

Construction and equipment

Building description

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul

The spacious, elongated hall building with a choir over a stilted semicircle was built in convincingly clear forms of classicism. On the front side a relatively small door with a rectangular stone frame, above it a high window with a semicircular end, on the sides two niches of the same size. A flat triangular gable forms the end. The choir side is emphasized by the main cornice and girdle , the semicircle of the window arches and the hemispherical roof. The whole is dominated by the gable triangle of the nave roof. The long sides are kept simple and have tall windows. The bell tower next to the church shows three Doric columns between corner pillars on the bell floor .

The interior of the church is kept simple and is characterized by the main and girdle cornice, and a cornice under the flat ceiling. The organ gallery stands on a double row of Doric columns.

Furnishing

With the modest means of the parish, furnishing the interior was correspondingly cost-saving. They limited themselves to buying the individual pieces from the holdings of such churches that had been abolished by secularization . To achieve this, the client focused on the beauty of the lines, the clarity and balance of the proportions and the authenticity of the material. One example of this is the huge flat ceiling that stretches over the nave and choir without interruption. The altars, the pulpit, the communion bench and four sculptures on the long walls come from the former Minorite monastery in Ratingen . The high altar is from the period 1680 to 1700, the side altars are works from the 18th century. The pulpit and communion bench, which match in style, were created at the same time as the high altar. Only the benches in the main nave and the crucifix above the high altar were created during the construction of the church.

The first organ dates from 1840 and was built by the Neuwied master organ builder Weil, it was destroyed in a bomb attack in 1944. Today's organ was built in 1953 by Gerhard & Söhne, Boppard. In order to counteract the damage that was to be feared at the time of the roof ridge when the bells were ringing by vibrations in the roof structure, a strong substructure was required. The master builder created this by placing the organ stage on four pairs of massive, fluted Doric columns made of Trier sandstone.

Worth mentioning is the figure of the saint Anna selbdritt , a work from the Middle Rhine region from the beginning of the 16th century.
