Irlich is a district of Neuwied in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1969 Irlich was an independent community.
location
Irlich lies at the mouth of the River Wied in the Rhine . The city center is south of Irlich and the Feldkirchen district to the west .
history
Irlich was presumably already settled in Celtic / La Tène times , as was the nearby Fahr .
The place was first mentioned in a document on November 11, 1022, when Emperor Heinrich II donated goods to Irlocha to the Archdiocese of Bamberg , which he had received from Archbishop Poppo von Babenberg of Trier . The burgraves of the Imperial Fortress Hammerstein initially administered Irlich for Bamberg. Around 1200 the goods were leased to Hammerstein. Because the payments were slow, the Bamberg Archbishopric sold its goods in Irlich in 1422 to the Archbishop of Trier, Otto von Ziegenhain . Irlich stayed with Kurtrier until 1803 . In 1822 Irlich was incorporated into the Princely-Wiedische estate rule .
Until the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants lived mainly from fishing and agriculture . Wine was grown in Irlich until 1913.
During the Second World War, Irlich was repeatedly the victim of bomb attacks. The strategic goals of the total of eight bombardments are said to have been the neighboring industrial plants of Rasselstein and the Wiedbrücke and the railway bridge. On November 3, 1944, Irlich was 80% destroyed by a bomb attack with thirty-two B-26 bombers . 78 people lost their lives in the process.
Irlich parish
In the implementation of the administrative reform passed by the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament on February 15, 1969 and a decision by the Irlich municipal council, the municipality of Irlich was dissolved on June 7, 1969 and assigned to the city of Neuwied. After the formation of the new town of Neuwied on November 7, 1970 and the resolution of the Neuwied City Council on January 22, 1971, Irlich became a district, which is represented by a local advisory board and a local councilor.

- Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul
The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built between 1833 and 1836 in the classical style and consecrated in 1843 . The side bell tower, which replaced the original roof turret, was added to the church in 1915.
- Celtic column
Irlich has a reconstructed column as evidence from Celtic times. It was called Reichsstein or Paradiesapfelstein in old travel guides and is now called the Celtic Column. The original was on display in the village until 1941. Today's Irlicher Stein was reconstructed in connection with the Deichwanderweg, a project by committed citizens from Feldkirchen, Engers and Irlich. Presumably the original is stored in the archives of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Rhineland-Palatinate on the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress . A copy is believed to be in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn . Its importance is to be assessed similarly to the Pfalzfeld column .
The aforementioned field church is probably in place of a pre-Christian sacrifice. Up until the Reformation in the wiedischen lands it was the common parish church for Irlich and Feldkirchen.
TSG Irlich 1882
The Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft (TSG) Irlich 1882 e. V. is one of the oldest and most traditional clubs in the Neuwied district. It currently has around 780 members from three different departments. The lion's share is provided by the football department. The other departments also include gymnastics and popular sports in general.
The first soccer team was provided by TSG in 1910. It entered 1919 as Sp.Sp.V. Irlich (game and sports club) joined the West German game association and thus took part in regular game operations. TSG Irlich I has been competing in the D Mitte district league in the Westerwald / Wied district since the 2019/2020 season. The club colors are yellow-blue. The jerseys that both teams wear at their home games in the Irish Poplar Stadium are also in these colors.
