Alcides Mendoza Castro

Alcides Mendoza Castro (born March 14, 1928 in Mariscal Cáceres , † June 20, 2012 in Lima ) was Archbishop of Cuzco and, as the Council Father of all sessions of the Second Vatican Council, its youngest bishop.

Life

Alcides Mendoza Castro entered with 12 years in the minor seminary in Ayacucho and received on 15 September 1951 in the Cathedral of San Antonio in Huancavelica by the Bishop of Huancavelica , Carlos Jurgens CSsR , the ordination . He was made Prelate of His Holiness and Provicar General of the Peruvian Military Ordinary at the age of 28 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on April 28, 1958 auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Abancay and appointed him titular bishop of Metrae . The Archbishop of Cuzco Carlos Byrne CSsR donated him episcopal ordination on July 6th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Alberto Maria Dettmann y Aragón OP , Bishop of Ica , and Fidel Mario Tubino Mongilardi , Auxiliary Bishop in Lima . At that time he was the youngest bishop in the world at the age of 30 and also the youngest bishop of the Second Vatican Council at 34 .

With the permission of the Holy See, Mendoza translated the missal ( Ordo missae ) into Quechua , an indigenous language widespread in the Andean region . He was the first priest in the world who was allowed to celebrate mass in this language.

Pope John XXIII appointed him on December 5, 1962 as the first Bishop of Abancay. Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 12, 1967 as Archbishop ad personam as Bishop of the Peruvian Military Ordinary and titular Archbishop of Pederodiana . On October 5, 1983 he was appointed Archbishop of Cuzco by Pope John Paul II , who was a guest in the Archdiocese of Cuzco in 1985.

On November 29, 2003, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Archbishop Alcides was a guest in St. Walburga in Werl every year and celebrated the Latin Mass in the provost church on Liborus Sunday. He had numerous contacts in Germany, which he visited regularly. He celebrated his 50th anniversary as a bishop in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Neuwied - Irlich together with the parish of St. Michael in Feldkirchen .

Awards and honors

He was honored with the Peruvian Medalla de Oro de Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo in 2004. In 2008, President Alan García honored him with the Orden al Mérito por Servicios Distinguidos en el Grado de Gran Cruz for his commitment to the population and commitment to the poor.
